New York's newest road death is on an e-bike. Before 2020 the NYPD's crash records named an e-bike, e-scooter or moped for at most 5 of the people killed in a year. In 2023 they named one for 66.

Which vehicles the rise is on: sparkydata.dev/articles/who-sti… 📊 #transitsky

Line chart of people killed on two wheels in New York City each year from 2013 to 2025: one line for all of them together and one for each vehicle the police records name. All two wheels: 52 in 2013, between 36 and 62 a year to 2019, then 79 in 2020, 85 in 2021, 82 in 2022, a peak of 111 in 2023, 81 in 2024 and 70 in 2025. E-bikes, e-scooters and mopeds: 0 in 2013 and no more than 5 a year to 2019, then 12 in 2020, 29 in 2021, 38 in 2022, a peak of 66 in 2023, 41 in 2024 and 38 in 2025. Motorcycles swing between 16 and 45 a year (25 in 2025). Pedal bicycles run between 10 and 28 a year to 2019 (28 in 2019), then fall to 7 in each year from 2023 to 2025.

Far fewer people are killed on New York's streets on foot or in cars than thirty years ago. People on two wheels went the other way: from about 47 deaths a year in the late 1990s to 71 in the early 2020s.

The long view: sparkydata.dev/articles/who-sti… 📊 #transitsky

Line chart of traffic deaths in New York City each year from 1995 to 2024 by road user, from the federal record. Pedestrians fall from 230 in 1995 to 118 in 2024, with a low of 89 in 2020; people in cars, vans, trucks and buses fall from 181 to 51, with a low of 35 in 2018; people on two wheels (motorcycles, mopeds, motor scooters and bicycles) stay between 37 and 67 a year until 2019, then step up to 72 in 2020, 83 in 2023 and 70 in 2024.

In the toll's first eight months, taxis and app cars sped up inside the zone while the rest of the city slowed: trips from January to August 2025 were 3.1% faster than a year earlier, against 0.9% slower elsewhere.

The comparison: sparkydata.dev/articles/twenty-… 📊 #transitsky

Line chart of the monthly average speed of yellow taxis and app-based cars on trips, October 2019 to August 2025, inside the toll zone, next to it and in the rest of the city. Inside the zone, about 8 mph before the pandemic, a spike to 16 in April 2020, easing back to about 8 to 9 by 2024 and lifting to about 9 to 9.7 in early 2025; next to the zone about 11 to 13.5; the rest of the city about 16 to 17.5.

These spam accounts have taken over the #transitsky feed here. There are thousands of them and Bluesky doesn’t seem to care. They generate comments about various topics then link this strange website.

Screenshot of a spam accounts on Bluesky that talks about public transit then links to some website and says “Explore adult dating” and has two photos of either the same woman or a different woman.

Look for the stripes. Each square is a day of subway ridership against the same weekday in 2019, and Tuesday to Thursday run darker than Monday and Friday, year after year since 2023. The office week has a shape, and it has held.

The calendar: sparkydata.dev/articles/who-sti… 📊 #transitsky

Calendar of every day from 1 January 2023 to 30 September 2026, one square per day in columns of weeks with Monday at the top and one band per year, shaded by subway ridership as a share of the 2019 average for the same day of the week, in steps of five points from under 60% to 90% and over. The Tuesday to Thursday rows are darker than Monday and Friday in every year, the weekend rows darker still, and holidays and storm days pale. MTA counts, no margins.
@sparkydata.devOct 8, 2026, 5:00 PM

The subway is no more punctual than before the pandemic, and no less. The share of weekday trips running more than five minutes late fell from the 2017 crisis to 2019, then went flat, and 2026 sits on the same line.

Year by year: sparkydata.dev/articles/hour-pl… 📊 #transitsky

Bar chart of the share of weekday New York City subway trips more than five minutes behind schedule, January to August of each year, from MTA figures: 20% in 2017, 19% in 2018, then between 15% and 16% every year from 2019 to 2026, with 15% in 2026.

Fewer vehicles at the door has not, on its own, meant faster streets. Since 1998 the number entering Manhattan below 60th Street on a fall weekday has fallen by about a quarter, yet taxi speeds in the core fell through the 2010s too.

The long view: sparkydata.dev/articles/twenty-… 📊 #transitsky

Line chart of vehicles entering Manhattan south of 60th Street on NYMTC's fall count day, 1990 to 2024: about 761,000 in 1990, rising to about 836,000 in 1998 and 844,000 in 1999 (a point resting on partial data), a dip in 2001, then a slow slide to 698,000 in 2017, a pandemic low of 580,000 in 2020 and about 619,000 in 2024, with a break in 2021 when the Queensboro Bridge count changed.

Amtrak cascades are rolling out new Airo train sets

I was on a sold-out older train, so it’s great to have modern trains with full capacity so more people in the NW can ride

But there’s little effort from #orleg to improve speed, increase service, or expand the network

The state needs a decisive transit plan to cut carbon emissions but it seems to be doing the opposite

The largest ODOT projects will both expand highways and cost 3.5 & 15.5+ billion dollars

These costs WILL limit road maintenance funding & prevent transit projects

Riding Portland’s rail system was really nice, and in this time of climate change and rising gas prices, more money should be invested in transit, not less

Unfortunately since the state failed the transportation package, TriMet has been forced to cut service

Space usage is an important lens regarding transit. A Single MAX car takes up about as much space as 5 parked cars (less when moving since cars spread out)

That’s 22 cars that won’t be contributing to traffic or fighting for parking. this was just a sort ride on one traincar

@corvallisurbanist.bsky.socialOct 6, 2026, 4:05 PM

In Portland, here’s my estimated number of cars the streetcars I was in helped replace:

MAX blue line: 22
red line: 14
orange line: 12
B loop streetcar: 22
yellow line: 14

The distances varied, the point isn’t to compare it’s to consider how much space 22 cars is

I took an overnight trip to Portland this weekend

While up there we only used transit to get around and took the train back down to Albany

Some follow up on the Oregon transportation survey. While its not an exact comparison to the actual ODOT budget, it’s clear people want the state to prioritize and spend more money on road maintenance and on reliable transit

Given the rapid increase in gas prices I would like to advise people about Corvallis’s bus system

With OSU in session 2/3/5/6 unfortunately switch down to every 40 minutes, but it’s still a free way to get around without having to worry about parking

A major section of I-5 southbound is closed in Portland and traffic remains near normal

ODOT plans to spend billions to add lanes in the rose quarter, but clearly alternatives to that route exist. If we invested in transit instead, traffic would decrease
