A small motorboat travels across a blue lake, viewed through softly blurred red wildflowers and grasses in the foreground. A rocky breakwater stretches across the distant water, with sparse trees and reddish vegetation lining the shore beneath a pale blue sky. The teal water and coral-red foliage create a striking color contrast.

Black-and-white view of Iceland’s south coast, where rugged cliffs overlook the dark sands of Kirkjufjara and Reynisfjara. Fine ribbons of white surf trace the shore, leading the eye towards the jagged Reynisdrangar sea stacks rising from the sea. Layers of cloud stretch above the broad headland, while light and shadow reveal the textures of rock, sand and water.

A sunny day at a rugged beach at Neptune State Park. The foreground is dominated by large, dark, textured rock formations clustered on the sand. Bleached pieces of driftwood and small logs are scattered around the rocks and across the sandy ground. In the background, waves with white foam roll onto the shore beneath a vast, clear blue sky that extends across the entire horizon. Two people can be seen walking near the water.

A vertical fine-art landscape photograph capturing a low-tide shore rendered in an olive, moss-green color palette. A sequence of dark, angular boulders encrusted with vibrant green moss forms a natural diagonal line through the wet sand, leading upward from a triangular stone anchored in the foreground.
Perched atop the largest mossy boulder mid-frame, a small sparrow stands alert against the wet shore, scanning the exposed mudflats left behind by the retreating water. The wet, textured sand stretches into the distance, dotted with pebbles and tidal detritus under flat, overcast light.
The photographic intent balances heavy, weathered coastal geology with a delicate spark of life, using the rhythmic placement of the stones to contrast the enduring weight of the shore with the fleeting presence of the small bird.

The last light of the day shines on the boats and buildings of Henningsvær Harbor. Lofoten, Norway, August 2026

This image shows Henningsvær Harbor close to sunset. The last rays of the sun stream in from the left, illuminating a row of colorful buildings and boats on the right side of the harbor in the central third of the image. The slightly wavy waters of the harbor itself, in the lower third of the image, are mostly in shadow, and are a deep blue with hints of pink and orange on wavelets here and there. The left side of the harbor is also in deep blue shadow. Beyond the harbor sharp mountains rise from about the middle of the image almost to its top, mostly in shadow but with a few peaks still in sun. The image is finished by the appearance of the deep blue, cloud-filled sky at the top and right.

For #RockinTuesday, this section of #ProposalRock on the #ORCoast indicates some incredibly intense #geology. With the #Cascadia subduction zone just off the coast, it’s no surprise. #TidesOutTuesday #NatureIsArt #BePrepared #PNW #ECK #GoOutside #Breathe #Notice #YouMatter

The south side of Proposal Rock at Neskowin on the Oregon Coast shows layers of basaltic and sedimentary rocks in tones of tan, blackish red, and orangish brown. Some of the layers on the left side jut upwards, at about an 80-85 degree angle, while other layers intersect these layers near the top of the picture closer to horizontal. These wildly different angles indicate some crazy violent geological upheaval and volcanic activity, which makes sense because of its location along the Cascadia Subduction Zone, which we need to be aware of… for “The Big One”. And somehow, I just love going to the Oregon Coast and any minute… I can’t think about it right now. But the rocks clearly have a cautionary tale to tell.

A color image of a small tidal inlet at the Hamilton Audubon Sanctuary in West Bath ME. The tree branches extending from the left edge of the frame are in shadow, while the inlet reflects the sun-splashed Autumn colors of the trees further into the frame. Fallen tree limbs line the bottom of the image, and tall, golden grasses define the curving edge of the inlet. Some taller trees can be seen in the distance, their tops lit by the morning sun. This was cropped from the original image, and I used Fujifilm's Nostalgic Negative film simulation.
