A New Chapter.

Yesterday, goodbye Škoda. Today, hello Kia, with paint so reflective that avoiding an accidental selfie became the first photographic challenge. 🤣

#photooftheday #year3 #thebrownstuff #photography

Close-up of the brushed silver Kia badge on deep red paintwork, photographed at an angle with reflections of a wooden fence and trees across the glossy surface.

End of an Era.

A final photograph of the Ĺ koda before saying goodbye. A few scratches, plenty of miles, and another chapter closed. Electric next.

Kill or Cure.

Feeling decidedly rough today, so my photographic subject came with a measure of spiced rum. The devil is in the refraction.

#photooftheday #year3 #thebrownstuff #photography

Amber light illuminates a measure of Cloven Hoof spiced dark rum in a shot glass against a black background. The bottle’s devil illustration and lettering distort through the glass and liquid.

Hanging.

Rain, a cold, and a photographic expedition twenty feet from the surgery door. Suspension beneath the bike shelter roof.

#photooftheday #year3 #thebrownstuff #photography

A swollen raindrop hangs beneath the weathered edge of a bike shelter roof, its bright curved rim enclosing distorted salmon-pink brickwork against a softly blurred background.

Bagged a Crane Fly

An unexpected visitor on an unlikely landing pad. A crane fly reveals the extraordinary intricacy of its wings against the rather less elegant backdrop of a blue dog poo bag.

#photooftheday #year3 #thebrownstuff #macrophotography

A crane fly perches on a crumpled blue dog waste bag, its delicate, translucent wings extending diagonally against a softly blurred peach-coloured background. The intricate wing veins contrast with the vivid blue plastic in an unexpected close-up composition.

On the Move

A Brighton & Hove bus passing through Hove, photographed at 1/20s while panning with the driver.

#photooftheday #year3 #thebrownstuff #streetphotography #panningphotography

A Brighton & Hove double-decker bus travels along a street in Hove, East Sussex. Photographed using a slow-shutter panning technique, the bus and its driver remain relatively sharp while the surrounding architecture dissolves into horizontal motion blur.

Feeding Time

A very obliging grey squirrel in St Ann’s Well Gardens, Hove. He was so unconcerned by my presence that I managed to photograph him at 40mm, practically within touching distance.

Sometimes wildlife comes to you.

Za pravdu — “For the truth”.

Letters revealed by sunlight and shadow on a wall in Prague. An iPhone photograph from August 2025, rediscovered today, and now a small print for my journal.

#photooftheday #year3 #thebrownstuff #photography #Prague

Sunlight passing through letters cut into projecting metal plates spells “Za pravdu”—“For the truth”—within staggered shadows on a warm, pale wall in Prague. Part of a stone arch enters the lower left corner.

Bright Eyes

Proving Ground

A Sail at Evening

A tiny white sail catches the evening light off Brighton and Hove, beneath distant wind turbines. Autumn trees frame the sea from Three Cornered Copse—an unexpected photograph from this evening’s dog walk.

Obelisk.

A lunchtime wander through Steyning churchyard. Sunlight on stone, a dark yew behind, and a photograph that found its shape in black and white.

Autumn Reedmace

The seed head is beginning to break apart, catching the morning light against the soft shapes of the reeds behind it. Green Ridge, Brighton.

Hiding in the Clutter

Sometimes there simply isn’t a clean background. A magpie tucked into the lattice of branches at Three Cornered Copse this morning.

Autumn Landing

A hoverfly taking a brief pause among the changing leaves at Three Cornered Copse. The mix of green, yellow and blue caught my eye as much as the insect itself.

Towards the Windmill

I’ve been trying to make this photograph for years. This morning the long lens was finally on the camera, the light was good and the dog walkers were in exactly the right place.

Green Ridge, Brighton.

A morning beside the River Adur: a grey heron watching the shallows, a black-headed gull crossing the mud, and two views of a little egret on the exposed banks.

Overcast light, low tide, and plenty to watch.

Under the Railway.

Repeating beams and rusted cross-braces beneath the railway bridge over the River Adur. Two treatments of the same view: I slightly prefer the muted colours, but the monochrome brings out the geometry.

Face-to-face

Ten minutes at lunchtime and a grasshopper that tolerated me leaning awkwardly over a grave just long enough to get the photograph I wanted. A substantial crop, but the light, low viewpoint and expression made it worth it.

#photooftheday #year3 #thebrownstuff #photography #grasshopper

A grasshopper faces the camera at ground level on a sunlit stone surface in Steyning, West Sussex. Warm autumn sunlight catches its antennae and body while strong shadows and the rough texture of the stone create a dark, dramatic setting.

A lacewing in the hallway.

Both images are handheld focus stacks with the OM-1 II and 90mm Macro. The closer view was shot with flash, revealing remarkable detail in the compound eye.
