Superb fan vaulting beyond fine tracery of Salisbury Chantry built as burial place of Countess of Salisbury, niece of Edw IV + Richard III.
Caught up in Tudor machinations re wives/religion, her family were condemned by Henry VIII, son killed + she beheaded at Tower of London. ALT

The elaborate 16th century chantry, created for Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury (1473-1541), in about 1529 was meant to be her final resting place. It was designed in Caen stone by Torregiano, a contemporary of Michelangelo c.1520. It has remained empty.
Some background:
She and her family were much involved with the royal family of Henry VIII - eg she was Lady in Waiting to Catherine of Aragon, godmother to Mary Tudor. However, they were much caught up in the royal politics and religious turmoil of the time.
Her son Henry was beheaded on the King's orders for plotting treason in the 'Exeter Plot'.
Her son Reginald was involved in conspiracies against the King's divorce and split from Catholicism. He fled to Rome, was made a Cardinal despite not being ordained a priest. He was the last Catholic Archbishop of Canterbury. Margaret's son Geoffrey.
Margaret was imprisoned in the Tower of London for 2 1/2 years, denying any treason and stating she had never been charged with any offence. She was executed in front of either very few observers, or 150, depending on which account is cited, and buried in St Peter ad Vincula at the Tower. Her remains were only discovered in 1857 when the church was renovated.

Panoramic photograph of the interior of Conwy Castle, North Wales, taken in 2014. Enormous medieval stone walls rise on either side of a narrow grassy courtyard, with crenellated towers visible beyond. A cobbled pathway leads towards the far wall, passing low stone foundations and a wooden bench. Gothic arched openings and a short stone staircase punctuate the weathered masonry beneath an overcast grey sky.

Opinions vary as to whether these corbels at Tewkesbury Abbey depict either Adam and Eve or the founders of the Abbey Robert Fitzhamon and his wife.
Whichever is correct, I particularly like the positioning of their arms and hands, it looks so natural.

This photo captures a close-up, low-angle view of the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt. The shot emphasizes the massive, weathered limestone blocks that make up the pyramid's base and tiers, showing significant erosion and a rugged texture.

By the look on his face this green man at Tewkesbury Abbey definitely didn't read the full job description.

The Venus fountain in Decumanus Maximus of Herculaneum.

It's been suggested that it features a bonus apotropaic eye to keep you safe, but it's probably just a spout, as Venus has enough going for her as symbol of love, beauty, fertility...

Narrow end of the stone tank of a public water fountain on the Decumanus Maximus of Herculaneum. At the end is a section protruding upwards with a relief of the goddess Venus, her hands near her head as if she's washing her hair. Beside her left thigh is an eye-shaped figure with a round hole at the left side. Some have interpreted this as apotropaic, but it's probably just spout for water to flow into tank from pipework.
The road is visible to the right and behind the Venus figure - it leads to a brick-built arch over the street. This is the edge of the currently excavated sections of Herculaneum, with a high wall separating it from modern town.

For #stunday. The golden light of sunset hitting the ruins of the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion, Greece. (2023)
#PhotographersOfBlueSky #photography #ruins #AncientBlueSky #travelphotography #AncientSiteSunday #SundayStonework #archaeology #Greece #Athens #EastCoastKin #ECK #WCK

The image shows the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion, Greece, capturing a historic row of ancient white marble columns standing against a soft, bright sky during sunset. A line of tall, fluted Doric columns remains standing, connected at the top by surviving stone architraves. The scene is illuminated by warm, low-angle sunlight, casting long, soft shadows and highlighting the texture of the weathered stone.

Most people never go or even know this place. It's down a bumpy dirt road away from any important road. Some of the worst bridges I've ever seen where on that route.I biked 110 that day for it.

I think you'll find that's my barrel!
Just some of the dozens of different characters on the Babington monument of c1538 at St Winifred's, Kingston on Soar.
A pun on the family name (a tun being a barrel) there is allegedly a hundred little people, I didn't count them..
