#SundaySnips | Witch
This week's word was made for me 🥹
I typed "witch" in The Witch of Eden Hollow 496 times. 😅
This is from Elias and Sterling's meet hate lol

That witch rolled his eyes. “You impudent fool.”

He stepped closer, kicking the dagger away from Sterling’s impending grasp. The action made him hiss, but still he pressed forward, crouching in front of him.

“Perhaps, it is lucky—or perhaps unlucky—that you are at the mercy of a healer,” the witch muttered. “Can you sit up?”

“Don’t touch me, witch,” Sterling snapped through gritted teeth.

The witch tutted. “Don’t be an idiot.” He reached out without hesitation, pressing a hand right on Sterling’s wound. “If you want this wound to close, you will let me work.”

Sterling tensed further when the witch began to mutter and whisper, which made the pain worse by threefold. He grunted and hissed under his breath.

“Relax.” The witch’s own wound was still bleeding and seeping from the tear in his robes, some of the flesh cauterised where the dagger made contact. “Hold still. This will only take a moment.”

Sterling grimaced when the witch’s magic took hold. He prepared himself for further pain and torment. Witches only delivered curses. There was always a bargain to be made, and this witch caught him at his most vulnerable.

I have a WIP all about witches.

#WritingCommunity #WriteSky

Our story takes place many lifetimes, yet still within one lifetime, before that.
In the ten hundreds, the arcane hall was the centre of a settlement of witches. You would think that was a long time ago, but it's actually closer to today than to the extinction of the dinosaurs. For decades at this point, they have been working towards something with the help of the arcane hall - something that would change the course of history.
To figure out what they were working towards, I refer you to reading the title again and really think about it hard.

Now, the world of witches in the onetyfirst century may be foreign for people born after April of 1807, so I will jump in here and there to explain things.

Blair stayed in her room and slept from the witching hour until dawn had broken into morning. She didn’t love the idea of working on less than a full night’s sleep. But the countess might not move around during the day. Which meant Blair would not squander that time. She dressed herself in full hunter garb, armor and weapons ready. And then she headed to the dining hall.

Blair found the dining hall empty, save for Nadia. The Thulean princess sat at a table nibbling at some egg-toast and apple pancakes. She looked up and her gaze met Blair’s. Nadia looked away and down at her meal.

Blair grimaced at this. Was Nadia mad or something else? It didn’t matter. Blair had decided to befriend Nadia, if nothing else. And if possible, Blair would become more than friends with Nadia. Blair found herself blushing at her own thoughts. She put her expression in order, and then approached the table.
“May I join you?” Blair asked.

Nadia’s head jolted up. For a moment she said nothing, staring at Blair with wide eyes. Then she recovered herself and spoke. “Of course, if you would like to share space with me, that is.”

Blair sat down and removed her gauntlets. “The countess would play word games and taunt me. Hester would throw herself at me. And the other girls would gossip to and about me non-stop. You’re actually interesting. You’re a pleasant conversationalist. And you’re stunning. Yes, I’d prefer to sit with you.”

Nadia choked on a bit of pancake, and then recovered with a cough. “People typically don’t talk to me after Hester has given them the warning speech.”

“If I listened to warnings, I wouldn’t have ended up in the mountains of Agartha hunting slavers.” Blair answered.

“Yeah but they say the skalds are on the warpath and there hasn’t been water for a century.”

The Marshal glanced at her, her eyes hard. “There’s water if you know where to look. And they do, or else they wouldn’t still be there. As for the skalds, it’s the same fighting there’s always been, it’s only that this time it’s the skalds leading the aggressors and not berserkers or blood witches or beast-shifters.”

“Sounds like a mess.”

“Life is messy. It just gets messier in some places.”

#SundaySnips Oct 11: Witch isn't a word I use for magic-workers in this book. Those in the Coriolese style are known as sorcerens; those in Toviran style are runecrafters.

Runecrafters were in high demand, doing a brisk trade in amulets for personal protection, wards to affix to lintels and hearths, and household charms of all sorts. Rhiann gathered that Toviran runecraft was becoming fashionable in certain parts of Coriol. They did work on the spot, too, etching preservation rune-shapes into the barrels and boxes and jars carrying goods from Aylesburh across all the Ogeval Waters.

With events like this market fair, Coriol bestowed Tovira with an enviable reputation as a land of prosperity and uniquely valuable magic, rather than a downtrodden backwater under Requin’s heel. Rhiann strove not to resent it. Her people had always been strong, clever, and industrious; it wasn’t Coriol’s fault that for three generations, no one had known that because Requin claimed both the yield and the credit.

#SundaySnips Oct 11 - Witch

One of my favorite little exchanges from A Harvest of the Heart!
Henry's a bit of a flirt, but Felix is cute when he's flustered!

Artist: www.instagram.com/ceci.s.arte

His reverie was interrupted when Henry returned. “Your milk, my good witch.”
Felix took the bag from his outstretched hand and laughed. “I think you’ll find it’s actually Witch Goode.”
“Hmm.” Henry tilted his head. “No, I think I like it when you’re my witch.”
Felix nearly dropped the bag in surprise and giggled nervously as he adjusted his hat. He tried to maintain eye contact with Henry as he thought of what to say in response.
“Right. Yes, that is … okay.” Felix’s stomach was doing flips.
Over a warm harvest background, two men are holding each other and looking at each other lovingly. They form a heart shape.
Henry is on the left. He has dark hair that is turning gray and a gray beard. He's wearing a brown shirt and a tan vest.
Felix is on the right. He was light brown hair and is wearing a gray witch hat, gray shirt, and has a purple shawl

I don’t have #witch. Here’s a dreadful #magician.

He was cut off from the horses. They plunged haphazardly, substantial and bright, their minds unshielded. Another Kudrum magician glided toward them as they milled in a net of fright. In moments they would be captured.

"No," he whispered.

Shawn's been with Liam two weeks, and his mum just told his older sister he has a boyfriend (which he was expecting, he just wasn't sure when). Eleanor has demanded a photo.

* alt text clipped the work 'ok'.

‘Send me a picture.’
‘What, right now?’
‘Yes, right now.’
‘Ugh. Hang up and I’ll take one. Call me back when you’ve got it.’
‘Will do.’
She hung up and I stared at my phone for a few seconds.
‘She bosses me around like I’m still a kid. Let’s get this over with.’ I leant back against him and let him drape his arms round me. ‘Ooh, this is our first selfie. Let’s make it good, I want it as my lockscreen.’
‘You’re so cute. But me too.’
Picture sent, I settled into leisurely kissing, until my stupid phone rang again. Liam wouldn’t let me sit up, so I answered it where I was.
‘Hi, El.’
‘Wow!’
‘I think she’s impressed, babe.’
‘Of course I’m impressed. He’s, wow, he’s gorgeous.’
‘He is, and he can hear you.’
‘Like I care. Is he as nice as he is hot?’
‘Yup. And smart, and funny. And, most importantly, mine.’
‘You look happy in the photo. Are you happy?’
‘Very.’
‘I’m pleased for you, kid, but it’s a bit of a shock. I had no idea you were into men. How long’s it been going on? When did you tell Mum? Does Dad know? Did Becky know? Is it serious?’
‘Woah, slow down. We’ve been together a couple of weeks that’s all, but we’ve been friends for ages. I told Mum and Dad yesterday. I haven’t spoken to Becky and I don’t intend to. It’s none of her business. And, yes, it’s serious. Any more questions?’
‘Yes. When are you bringing him up for the weekend? The kids would love to see you.’
‘You never invite me to stay.’
‘Well, it’s time we fixed that. Anyway, you’ve never been going out with a god before. I didn’t like that woman around my kids. I know you were with her for a long time, but I never liked her. Manipulative little witch.’
That, at least, was true. Eleanor never liked Becky. Neither did my mum. I’d thought they were just being overprotective but maybe I should have listened to them. Liam tightened his arms round me and nuzzled the top of my head and I suddenly wanted to get off the phone.
‘Fine, I’ll talk to Liam, and we’ll see what we can do. Be good to see you all. Everyone

Charlie has only just met her new partner, Jack, this morning, and she is a bundle of excited nerves. She is TRYING to like him, but kinda struggling.

They’ve just discovered something in the case is less exciting than they’d first thought…

"So, not a satanic death-cult, then," Charlie asserted cheerfully, rising to her feet.
"Seems not, thankfully. But to be fair, satanic death-cults are extremely rare. Satanists tend to be fairly benign."
"I see."
Charlie shrugged off her failed joke with minimal dismay, prepared to take his word for it. He glanced at her up and down one more time.
"When I said I had a working knowledge of occult symbolism, I wasn't exaggerating. I'm a priest," he clarified.
"Excuse me if I've offended you, Father,” she offered, taken aback. She remembered her ready confession to atheism with a little chagrin and how he’d taken it coldly.
"No, no," he chuckled. "Not that kind of priest.”
He reached into his collar and carefully pulled out a thin silver chain upon which dangled a few tiny charms. One of which, he pointed out, was a silver pentacle.
"So you're a satanist, then?” She laughed, gobsmacked.
"No, a... a pagan," he stuttered, tucking the necklace back under his clothes. She didn't ask what that meant, as it didn't feel relevant in the moment, but she tried not to let the revelation unnerve her. He’d never clarified what his own beliefs were when he’d been quizzing her in the lift. She bristled with shame that she’d been too eager to impress him to notice the omission at the time. She’d let him get the jump on her.
“And I’m a witch. That’s not a problem, is it?”
“No, of course not. But you could say that’s its own set of biases, couldn’t you?”
“Touché, touché,” he said gracefully.

Dipping into the final fight of the book for this one!

Roderika and Henet need to get Mary away from Jonah, who’s finally gone full mask off and now a danger to everyone.

#WritingCommunity #WriteSky #HQPress #WritingPrompts

"What happened?" She whispered, stepping up beside her triend.
Henet looked astonished, blinking as if a bright light had flashed in front of their eyes. With a shake of their head, they said, "I don't know. That bell disrupted my spell somehow. It should have flattened them all but even the soldiers were able to shrug most of it off." A look of deep anger crept into Henet's features, something she had never seen before. Their scowl was fierce and their voice dropped low. "How're we handling this?"
She tried to cobble together a semblance of a plan. Behind them Arlo was back on the ground, desperately trying to stand by leaning on his spear. Tala looked terrified, her hair on end and her tail three times its normal size. "Can you get Mary away from him and behind you?"
Henet nodded. "She won't thank me for the lost hair, but I don't think whatever Jonah's doing is affecting her too. As long as he doesn't ring that bell before I get my spell off she'll be fine."
"Okay." She checked the spirits in her aura. They suffused her body again, lending her strength and speed. But would it be enough? "Give me a boost past his men when you do. You'll have to handle them on your own."
"Got it."
"Enough consorting with your pet demon, witch! It cannot help you now!" Jonah called out. He flung his arm towards them, but didn't ring the bell. "Men, send that filthy thing back to hell where it belongs!"
"Reka!" She heard Arlo call out behind her. "Remember, he fights dirty!"
"Now!" Henet cried, flinging one arm out towards Jonah while pulling the other towards their chest. "Tala! Catch!"

Digs is lamenting that her father's vest that she has worn to honor his memory at every Unification Day celebration no longer fits.

From Wardens of Felcrown, my upcoming fantasy adventure serial about a megadungeon that becomes a city and the power of community in the face of evil.

#SundaySnips

Screenshot of a work-in-progress manuscript with the word 'witch' highlighted.

“Let me take a look, Dignity.” Her mother scanned her up and down, then tugged uselessly on it just as Digs had attempted. She raised an eyebrow and a conspiratorial look crossed her crimson-skinned face. “I’m sorry, my dear, but have you been drinking double your elixir? It seems your chest has filled out quite a fair bit.”
“No, Mom.” Digs squeezed the vest together, hoping it would stretch in the back but knew it wouldn’t. “The elixirs don’t work that way, and it’s my stupid gut that’s as much of an issue as my chest.”
It had been several years since Digs started alchemically transitioning to a woman, helping her feel like her true self. At first, it took time for the elixirs to work their magic, but soon the results were undeniable. The witch that brewed them assured her that weight gain was not a side effect, but Digs still wanted to fault the potions.

This #SundaySnips features Hazel, the FMC of my cozy romantasy wip about a witch returning home after a war to reopen her gran's herb shop and reconnect with the blacksmith she left behind.

#WritingCommunity #Writingprompts #Herbs&Iron

“You’re not a witch,” the boy announced, his chin jutting confidently.

“I’m not?” Hazel laughed, as surprised at this news as anyone else.

“Of course not,” the boy insisted, freckles crinkling as he scrunched his nose, clearly irritated by her ignorance. “Witches can’t stand the touch of metal. You’ve got copper earrings, brass buckles, and probably iron tacks in your boots. And witches have the Mark. If you were a witch, you’d have a great big mole on your face or a splotchy birthmark all down your arm.”

“King Nestor is a witch. How does he wield the Black Blade of Ebonfell if he can’t stand the touch of metal?”

“That’s different,” the boy declared, crossing his skinny arms over his chest. “It’s star-metal, see? A gift from the Bright Mother. Witches can use star-metal.”

“Roger Cahill,” the girl sputtered, clambering up onto the fence to yell at her brother face to face, “You are full of … of… horse hockey! That’s what!”

“Shut up, Melly! If she is a witch, you just gave her my name!”

“Shut your own self up! If you bothered to go to school once in a while instead of skulking around the market with those Lamkin boys, you’d know how stupid you sound.”

The girl, Melly, had gone bright red in the face and gripped the top cross beam of the fence so tight it turned her knuckles white. Her brother leaned as far back as he could manage without falling off the fence. Roger Cahill, at least, seemed to know something about what strong women could do.

“All that nonsense about ugly marks and not touching metal is bunk the Usurper made up to scare everyone,” Melly scolded. “Witches are just people, like everyone else.”

A knot loosened in Hazel’s chest. There would be more fools like Roger, of course, people who believed the rumors the Usurper peddled and looked at Hazel with suspicion haunting their eyes. But as long as there were people like Melly to balance them out, to call out horse hockey when they heard it, Hazel stood a chance of making a home here.

The #SundaySnips Word of the Week is 'witch' - despite my deep love of witchcraft and covens I've ironically not used this word a lot in my current wip 'The Canary.'
#WritingCommunity #Writesky #HQPress

The Sunday Snips word of the week is 'witch' - the following is an excerpt from my novel WIP 'The Canary' featuring said word - "Which one of y'all is Katie?"

God fucking damn it.

Betrayed like the sole cloaked party member in a witch hunt, the table pointed to me. Face aghast with horror, I looked at them with panic in my eyes. They didn't know I was terrified, I couldn't blame them. Even so, what kind of people were they to just rat me out immediately? A detail I would pocket. The only one who didn't point was Bekah.

Dido on the Edge is out in less than two weeks so here's a bit of it.

“What kinds of people live in Edgewise?” She could hear scratching and clicking nearby but couldn’t tell what Weasel was doing.
“Ordinary people,” said Weasel. “There’s lots of different settlements, y’know, but you travel around enough you learn that folk are the same everywhere.”
“Any bad guys?” She didn’t know why she asked. The question just seemed to pop into her mouth.
“Bad guys?”
“Like... I don’t know. Witches. Dragons. Monsters?” The sounds were getting louder. Where was Conductor? She hadn’t even noticed him leave.
“Monsters? Nah. Just people. But that’s the thing, Miss...”
Weasel was abruptly bathed in the fiery light of the furnace. His paws had long spikes, like claws, jutting from them. He scraped them along the wall, making a nasty metallic skreeeek.
“People are bad enough, ain’t they?”

from A Prayer for the Pirate Queen 🏴‍☠️ 💜 ⚓️ currently in third draft revisions

"Who, me? Hardly." There was something there in Iona's tone, an edge of defensiveness that Kallista was unfamiliar with. Had she actually struck a nerve? She hadn't entirely meant to. But Iona was soon smirking again. "I've never been one for mooning over one woman, unlike someone I know."

Kallista sighed, trying to smile. She couldn't meet her best friend's eyes. "There's nothing left there, Iona."

"Pfft. Catch me another, fisher."

"The woman called me a butcher, back when we took the Volos. Whatever initial attraction we might have had is gone now under the harsh light of reality."

"Keep telling yourself that."

Of course Iona knew the truth about her feelings, but Kallista was never going to admit it. Iona hadn't been in the room with her and Geni the last few times though, and she didn't know Geni as well as she knew Kallista. It was obvious that, the more Geni got to know Kallista, the spell cast by their first night faded for her. It was just a shame that Kallista only grew more bewitched by the day.

Back into Blood on the Snow for this one, and Avebury being his usual deeply condescending and irritating self

( saranadosfiction.com/2020/09/16/b... )

“Mr Fest. I must admit, I’m honestly surprised to see you up so early, though I congratulate you on your newfound devotion to your studies. I’ll assume this seat isn’t taken?”

*Oh for the sake of all the gods, why did it have to be him?* Fest thought. He groaned internally, looking up to meet a pair of familiar cold brown eyes behind steel-rimmed spectacles – spectacles which, intriguingly, looked significantly more battered than they had the last time he’d met their owner. “What do you want, Avebury?”

“I should have thought the answer to that would have been obvious,” the Sinnlenst replied, pulling out a chair and settling himself companionably close to Anneke, who flinched almost imperceptibly away from him. “Or are the dietary habits of humans quite so difficult for your kind to understand?”

“There’s plenty of other tables. You’re welcome to go sit anywhere else you damn well please.”

“And what if I don’t please? Are you willing to use your witchery to get rid of me?”

That was obvious, even for you. And, come to think of it, Avebury looked a good deal less put-together than he normally did. Quite apart from the spectacles, which looked as though they’d very possibly been trodden on at some point, he had a black eye coming in, a split lip, and a mess of bruising over the bridge of his nose – a nose which, to Fest’s eye, looked just a little more crooked than it had done the last time they’d talked. *I wonder who happened to your face.*

*I wonder if, if I asked them nicely, they’d happen to it again.*

“I’m not going to rise to that,” he said, quietly, and tried to ignore the fact that his hands had started shaking.

Victor, a young man with some anxiety issues, saw a dead body today. It’s taking him a minute to get to sleep.

But it’s all fine. Totally fine. Nothing weird is going to wake him up in the middle of the night…

That night, he lay in bed, trying not to think about what had happened, but not having yet learned that the more you tried not to think about something, the more it possessed your mind. It wasn’t until after his mother turned off the light in the hall that he thought to ask her to leave it on, but, at fourteen, knew he was too old to be afraid of the dark.
When he heard her close her bedroom door, he switched on the light from his phone on the bedside, but the bright and singular light distorted everything in his room. Once comforting toys cast eerie long shadows on the wall, growing into monsters that loomed over him. He flicked it off again. The thought of lighting a candle briefly crossed his mind, but he immediately dismissed it as the worst idea he’d had all day. He let his eyes adjust, nervous to close them. Slowly, sleep crept upon him, mercifully overtaking his anxiety.
