Prof #YeShuhua achieved one of the world's most precise measurements of Universal Time among other accomplishments.

Thx to @minouette.bsky.social for clueing me in to this challenge (ck out her amazing art!)

I’m switching up day 15 & 17, & sharing my ‘Eclipse of Moths’ for #spacetober_challenge prompt ‘moon’. 🧪🐡🔭🦋

The delightful term for a group of moths is an eclipse. This hand-printed lino block print shows 5 of the noctunral moths of Ontario in front of the moon at a lunar eclipse. The 5 moths are:

My linocut print of moon at lunar eclipse in oranges and brown against a very dark sky behind 5 moths: the gorgeous green Luna moth (Actias luna), the yellow and purplish-pink Imperial moth (Eacles imperialis), the Five-spotted Hawk Moth in brown with orange spots (Manduca quinquemaculata), the red-orange, black and cream Virgin Tiger Moth (Apantesis virgo), and the black and white White Underwing (Catocala relicta). In white it reads “An eclipse of” above and “moths” below. I designed the typefaces to suggest the meaning of the words. "Eclipse" is full of crescent moon shapes. "Moths" is written in moth shapes.

For the #spacetober_challenge day 14 prompt space history, my #linocut of astronomer Elisabeth Koopmann-Hevelius (1647-1693) 🧪🐡🙄🔭 #histsci using a brass sextant to make astronomical observations & some of the new constellations her husband Johannes Hevelius named based on their observations, &

My linocut portrait of Elisabeth Hevelius using a giant sextant on the right side and part of the new constellation named and depicted by Johannes Hevelius based on observations he made with her, featuring the Lynx. The star map is printed in a black vertical stripe. Then there’s a gradient of gold to red, so the sextant is largely gold and she’s mostly in red.

Day 12 #spacetober_challenge is Roman Space Telescope so I made a new portrait of its namesake #astronomer Nancy Grace Roman (1925-2018), NASA’s 1st chief of astronomy throughout the 60s & 70s, who helped shape the space astronomy program. 👩🏼‍🔬🔭🎢🧪🐡 #histsci Nicknamed “mother of Hubble” for her role in

My linocut portrait of astronomer Nancy Grace Roman in a button down shirt, facing left at an angle to the plane of the image, holding a model of the AOSO satellite in her right hand and pointing at it with her left. She has short hair and glasses. Behind her is the night sky with Ursa Major above her head. Both the OAO satellite and Hubble Space Telescope are above her. Her shirt and black vertical stripes and is in a gradient of green to violet from right to left because its a stellar absorption spectrum.

This #Spacetober_challenge 🧪🐡🔭 day 10 prompt is Earth so I’m sharing my Theia #linocut about the formation of Earth’s moon. This 6 colour hand printed linocut print illustrates the formation of the Earth’s Moon in a comic book influenced pop art style. The favoured model of Moon formation is that

My 6 colour linocut showing collision of Theia (here a large cratered purple sphere, only half of which remains) with the proto-Earth (swirling blue and white sphere) in a comic book Pop Art influenced style. There are zigzagging orange, yellow and white shapes like a comic book explosion at the impact site and projectiles splashing up. Theia is shown moving with wide yellow and blue stripes and the word “BANG!” In red with darkest blue outlines. The bodies are on an extremely dark blue background and in the bottom left corner is a yellow rectangle (or trapezoid) with text “4.5 Billion years ago”.

As described this is my slightly stylized collaged lino block print with an image of the parachute deployed during the descent of the Mars Perseverance rover as it landed on the planet February 18, 2021. The spacecraft team selected the red and white stripes to encode a secret message in binary: "DARE MIGHTY THINGS" along with the latitude and longitude of the Jet Propulsion Labs, in Pasadena, California (34°11’58” N 118°10’31” W). The letters and numbers appear in black. This 8" x 8" print is made by hand on lovely Japanese papers.

My 11” x 14” linocut portrait of Sophie Brahe, a Renaissance aristocrat in headgear, ruff, dark clothing with medallion on a wide band and a long scarf or other thin fabric draped over her shoulders with her hands folded in front of her and alchemical vessels, printed in dark bronze ink, on a bronze background. In green behind her head is a map of the gardens at Uranienborg, with her head at the centre of the diamond shaped pale green knot garden (geometric planned gardens). This is surrounded by an orchard in darker green with semicircle bump outs on each side of the diamond.
