🌊 Around #Antarctica, coastal polynyas are regions of persistent open water within the sea ice. They play a crucial role in polar climate by exchanging heat and moisture between the ocean and atmosphere, absorbing solar radiation, promoting biological productivity, and acting as ‘sea-ice factories’.

So much cool and important research at @ncar-ucar.bsky.social - from health to environment to buildings and hazards. I couldn’t help but share. Thanks, NCAR! 🙌🏼

🙏 @highcountrynews.org & @cuanschutz.bsky.social for making sure I heard about this super science.

Combined sea ice extent in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas (north and northwest of Alaska) is the highest it's been at this point in the season in 25 years in NSIDC data. Nonetheless it's still well below the typical extent of the late 20th century. #akwx #Arctic #SeaIce

More than 4.2 million km² of Arctic ocean that used to freeze has now gone over a year without sea ice. Above 80°N the sea still refreezes every winter; nearly two thirds of the loss sits below 60°N.

🧊 Broken ice predicts September's Arctic low

Chinese researchers found that the amount of loose, broken ice at the Arctic's edge in summer is a strong clue to September's ice cover. Adding ocean data sharpened forecasts.

Sea ice extent in the Beaufort Sea (north of Alaska, NW of Canada) is the highest for Oct 10 since 2009 in NSIDC analysis. Current ice extent would have been typical in the early 2000s. Chukchi Sea ice extent is also well above the 1990-2020 median but similar to 2021. #akwx #Arctic #SeaIce

Breaking News! Code UFB!!! As of October 13, Antarctic sea-ice extent is more than 5.0 standard deviations below the 1991-2020 daily average. Under "normal" circumstances, the likelihood of this happening just by chance would be about 1-in-5,800,000.

September #Arctic sea ice extent since 1850 - comparison now updated through 2026 Please note that the reconstruction (SIBT1850 v2) is for the 15th of September, while the NSIDC is a monthly mean. You can read more about this data set at doi.org/10.7265/jj4s... via @nsidc.bsky.social.

Line graph time series of September Arctic sea ice extent for every year from 1850 through 2026. Two datasets are compared in this time series. The Walsh et al. 2019 reconstruction is shown with a solid blue line. The NSIDC Sea Ice Index v3 is shown with a dashed red line only for the satellite era. There is large interannual variability and a long-term decreasing trend over the last few decades.
