In a first Maryland Systema class, beginners often notice the same things: held breath, extra tension, lost balance, and tunnel vision.

That is useful information. Once you notice those habits, you can start changing them.

Most beginners notice the same thing in their first Systema class: pressure changes how they move.

Breathing gets shorter, muscles tighten, balance shifts.

Training starts by noticing those reactions and learning to work through them.

So proud to be part of initiatives like this! Educating our city about #serviceanimals will vastly improve the ability for handlers to participate in our community. This is the first of a series of focused disability task-forces the #RockvilleMD HRC intends to run! 🐕‍🦺

Self-defense is not a contest.

Trying to “win” can keep you involved after you already have a way out.

Protect yourself, create space, and leave when you can. You do not need to prove anything.

Confined space changes everything. When a wall, car, railing, or doorway limits movement, pushing harder is not always the answer.

We train to find the smallest useful opening: enough room to turn, stay balanced, and move toward safety.
