Ben didn’t want her to go home yet. It was ridiculously late by first date standards, but he was having far too good a time with her. To the point that he was beginning to have a minor identity crisis, actually. It was hard to be mysterious when she smiled at him that way—like pure joy bracketed by the most adorable dimples he’d ever laid his eyes on. Christ. How long have I been smiling like an idiot for? His cheeks were aching. He was kind of surprised those muscles hadn’t atrophied a long time ago. Rey sighed next to him as they walked along the quiet street, fading in and out of the glow of street lamps. He looked down at her, still smiling. She wore his leather jacket, which he’d offered to keep her warm, and a pretty black dress that fell to just above her knees. It had two large red buttons near the collar. It was cute. She was cute, with her shiny brown hair tied back in a ponytail that swayed and bounced as she walked. “Are you tired?” he asked cautiously, trying to test the waters. “No, actually,” she answered. “I’m surprisingly wide awake for it being two in the morning.” “Same. Is there…anywhere else you’d like to go? Anything you’d like to do?” She pondered it for a moment and then her face lit up like the star atop a Christmas tree, glowing with radiant excitement. Ben almost leaned in, he was so attracted by the sight. “Oh! There’s a 24-hour diner about ten blocks from here. They make the most incredible root beer floats. It has to be the brand of ice cream they use…” Something about a root beer float at two in the morning was just so…Rey. “Let’s go, then. Should I call a cab?” “No, don’t.” She reached out and took his hand in her small one, interlocking their fingers, and looked up at him with those soft, kind eyes. She was so sincere and pretty and was that a nosebleed he felt coming on? “I’d like to keep walking with you, if that’s okay,” she said, to which he nodded. “More than okay.” In the end, it really was the best root beer float Ben had ever tried. Maybe it was the float that granted him access to the inside of her apartment and the comfort of her bed. Or maybe it was just the overwhelming feeling that with her was exactly where he was meant to end up.

a lady in regal dress and pearls holding a daggerShe was like something out of Ren’s dreams, too impossibly incredible to exist in reality. As the cerulean skirt of her gown coiled around her legs with her movements, with the early morning sun flashing along her gleaming blade, he thought perhaps she could just as easily be something out of his nightmares. She was beautiful, but in a lethal way, like first blood on fresh steel. He watched her practice alone in the courtyard that morning as the sun rose over the distant valley peaks. If he leaned over the balustrade from his fourth floor balcony, he could almost hear her calculated exhalations. He couldn’t help but smile to himself. Who was this noble lady, dressed in finery, wielding a sword with the skill of a knight when she thought no one was watching? Ren was therefore surprised when he entered the Great Hall for his delegation’s welcome feast to find that same woman seated at the head table to the left of the king. Her posture was straight and perfect, her smiles politely regal, and her brown hair was done in a series of shining braids and twists. He stared at her from across the hall, his arms crossed over his chest. She wasn’t the queen, he knew that much. The king didn’t have any daughters, either. Only two spoiled sons who would eventually rue the day they wore the crown. “Huxley,” Ren said, nudging his squire with his elbow. “Who is that girl next to the king?” Hux looked and of course he had an immediate answer. “Ah. That is the king’s ward, Ser Ren. Though I cannot recall her name…” “No need,” Ren said. He stood from his table with a wicked smile. “I shall learn it myself.”
