Return to Oz.

This was originally just a simple 6 line piece, but a little over a month ago it caught my eye and became something much larger and is now deeply informing the tone and format of my book.

A prose-poem called "Return to Oz" that reads:

Last night I dreamt that I was Judy Garland
with an electric guitar in my hands,
playing songs from The Wizard of Oz, lightning fast.
My electric guitar, red hot, burning me
and seeming to melt into my little hands,
more a weapon than an instrument.
Self defence is at premium these days, y’know?
And we’re not in fuckin Kansas anymore, Toto.
You were by my side, for a time, I think.
Not as a little dog, but a faceless boy about half my size.
And so many rich old men were offering me helping hands,
Grinning at me wolfishly.
Devilishly.
The grimaces of predators, hungry, rumbles in their bellies.
Not men, I realized quickly, but canines standing on their hindquarters, pretending.
Growls growing, lodged in their throats, and
saliva,
pungent with the scent of decay from so many other helpless creatures they’d devoured
dripping out down their necks from underneath their latex people masks,
uncanny,
but convincing enough.
Pulsing sanguine red scepters jutting out from their paunchy undercarriages,
leaky and threatening.
And I began,
I began to run.
And I seemed to know everything about who I was,
And nothing of myself.
You were running with me side by side, but seemed to turn on me too, hungry as any dog would be, I guess, so so far from Kansas,
drawing back, no longer fleeing on beside me, joining the other canines in the hunt.
I trip and fall eventually,
Ruby slippers aren’t for running in.
And I hear all your jaws snapping,
snarling as you close the distance.
And as I wait to feel the bite I click my heels three times.

There's no place like home.

The Land Of Little Kings

I was raised to be king in a land with no monarchy. These lands were taken from those who inhabited them to be inherited by me. I live and toil amongst the peasantry that I shall one day command. It is said that this work ethic I'm developing will make me a better man. At the very least it'll be a story that will convince those on whom I aspire to trample, that I am worthy of my title.

I rub shoulders and trade tales with other would-be kings where we all discuss the most royal of things: the importance of a moat and the size of our boat. At the moment we are without them, so we do everything short of gloat, while we earn enough wage to keep us afloat.

I live in a land of little kings where our domain extends to our front door or lawns: little castles on the hill with digital armies standing guard. We have a calvary of steel horses to travel the lands between. Anyone who isn't us is an unwitting pawn. Our favorite pastimes are consumption and waste. The speed in which we want tasks completed is with a great deal of haste while we do our duties at a leisurely pace. We kneel to no deity that doesn't guarantee prosperity or punishes with poverty those who lack our piety.

Your attempts to disenchant will fall on deaf ears. I'll find my throne before long, just give me some years.

Title: a worn-out woman by @k13uanh
Poem: Her lips were cracked. A smile would have tugged at her taut face. Her flaxen complexion had weathered variegations — patina veins pulsated on her neck. Strained shoulders sent an ache down her spine. Closing the curtains and tumbling on her sofa, she could finally allow her eyes to rest.

In case you’re curious, this is a prose poem. Not just a poem without line breaks. Not a story. Something else. Something beyond—see what you think.

Title: Look Past
Poem: The ruckus of the house party fell behind us as we walked to my car. I came on a whim. Your pity invite was haphazard. On the phone, shouting the street name next to a boombox. I was zipping past green lights. Navigation barely registered the name. Sounding it out was not in her repository of skills. You seemed unfazed when I arrived. Stopwatch for an hour on the dot. I signalled to my getaway but you followed. I didn't look at you — maybe I wanted the last image of you to be that sweet smile on my screen. I rummaged through, scraping the bottom of my bag for the keys. Jumbled clattering lip gloss, coin purse and a book I barely read. I spread the contents, ploughing through the debris. A steady voice commanded, "Look at me. Look at me." I paused. I obliged. I remained inside your eyes. I felt still. I felt calm. A crutch that made me feel alone. I found the keys and unlocked the door. Goodbye — this feeling will subside.

#ScribesAndMakers ~ Share something you've been working on this month.

I wrote one haiku, one longer-form poem and this week a new stream of consciousness-style prose poem. I favour flash prose poems.

I'm aiming for more prose poems this month.
