#PhotoFriday Who can remember Newcastle before Eldon Square and the University's Claremont Tower building?

Here are a few views of the city in 1966 showing the as it was 60 years ago. Can you spot anything else that's changed in these photographs from our University Archive?

In #NationalBakingWeek we go back to the coronation celebrations in 1953. Seated are the oldest residents of Collingham Row, Newark, Elizabeth and William Duckworth. Between them is a magnificent cake – we hope there is enough for the whole street.

An elderly couple sit – she wears a floral dress, and he has a flat cap. Between them is a small table with a tablecloth, and a three-tiered iced cake. It is decorated with a crown on the top.

#PhotoFriday today is the Council House just shortly after its construction in 1879. Notice the statue of Sir Robert Peel which at the time was only the second statue erected in Birmingham in August 1855. Ref – Council House 81 #LibraryofBham #Brumpic

Birmingham Council House in the background of the photo - a grand Victorian civic building in a Renaissance Palace and Classical Revival style. A columned entrance with a balconied top and a dome. Pedestrians stood alongside the building in the bottom left of the photo. A statue dedicated to Sir Robert Peel in front of the building with a horse and cart to the left. Construction debris to the right and in front of the statue.

I finished Nick Lipscombe’s “Wellington’s Guns” earlier in the week and found it a well-written and authoritative account of the organisation and command of British (and Allied) Artillery in the Peninsula and Waterloo campaigns.1/2

#histbookchat, #photofriday #booksky

A hardcover copy of the book “Wellington’s Guns: The untold story of Wellington and his Artillery in the Peninsula and at Waterloo” by Nick Lipscombe.

The cover features a period painting of Royal Artillery gunners and a field gun being observed by an officer on horseback (Wellington himself?)

Yes, these highly decorated trinkets are real eggs. You could buy one of these at the Bakewell Show in the 1980s. Or maybe it would inspire you to have a go yourself, though you’d definitely need a delicate touch.

A photo of a row of properties. A shop in the near foreground on the bottom right with people stood out outside. The largest property in the row is next - an impressive Arts and Crafts three storey building with a turret. A row of balcony windows below this and two bay windows beneath this. Two terraced houses at the end of the row.

This was my first time reading one of Robert Stern's books. I thought it was pretty good - solid writing, good use of primary sources, good selection of secondary sources, perspective from both Japanese and US sides.
