Indeed, years before Genealogy of Morals, Darwin had argued that our moral principles had evolved from social instincts.

I wrote about that here (paywall): https://muse.jhu.edu/article/676147/pdf

Friedrich Nietzsche was born OTD in 1844.

He derided Darwin’s theory, but On Truth and Lies explores the human mind as evolved. And Genealogy of Morals treats the evolution (“genealogy”) of our moral principles as more deeply revealing than their content.

In our next CLPS seminar, Luna De Souter will discuss how to algorithmically identify causal structures and how to bring techniques from #ML & mathematical optimization into regularity-theoretic approaches to causal discovery. Join us!

Title

Discovering causal regularities, numerically

Speaker

Luna De Souter

Abstract

This talk presents a new approach to algorithmically discovering causal structures as defined by modern regularity theories of causation. These theories define causation in terms of redundancy-free regularities. Coincidence Analysis, the existing method for identifying such regularities, builds models representing such regularities one piece at a time so as to avoid adding redundancies—an approach too inefficient to handle datasets with many variables. I demonstrate that such models can also be built by optimizing an appropriately characterized numerical loss function. This finding opens the way to integrating techniques from machine learning and mathematical optimization into regularity-theoretic causal discovery, so that datasets with many more variables can be analyzed. At the same time, some outputs of loss function optimization need to be interpreted more cautiously than outputs of Coincidence Analysis. I spell out appropriate interpretation guidelines.

Great episode on animal tool use by @auersperga.bsky.social!

This is a topic we care deeply about. In a recent 📄, we propose a taxonomy of different forms of tool use, and discuss how the ‘tooling’ framework fits with traditional accounts: www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

1/3 A crawling cell has no leader — yet its whole front can swing one way at once. New theory models the cell's edge as a ring of tiny 'spins,' each one either pushing outward or resting, that align like atoms in a magnet. #academicsky #biophysics #philsci

I'm now at work on another paper on the Neo-Kantian background to Henry Margenau's philosophy of science, and how it is indebted to Cassirer's and the neo-Kantians' approach to causation in quantum mechanics.

1/3 A photon hits a molecule, and two electrons spin apart into a shared quantum state. For microseconds, that spin pair stays coherent — at room temperature, in ordinary solvent. Its fate depends on the magnetic field around it. #academicsky #quantumbio #philsci
