Macular hole in right eye, surgery needed in both, an unexpected diagnosis today.
Stumbling out of the opticians, pupils fully dilated from testing, I decided to stick with the planned #PatchBirding & to train my left as my scope eye.
Caspian Gull, Jack Snipe, Otter & Weasel πͺΆ

#Patchbirding after workβ¦ 4 Mandarins at the Hothfield Flood Storage Reservoir, flushed off the river by a fly fisherman & a dog walker. 2 pairs, they then flew to the waterfall lake. First here since late Spring. Also the Cettiβs Warbler singing at the Waterfall Lake again. 3x time this year.
All quiet over high tide on #patchbirding but 2 rock pipit were my 1st of autumn ππ»
Flock of FIVE Ring-necked Ducks at Cadover, Dartmoor. While editing photos confirmed the 1st W birds. Initially on Big Pond, then flew to Whitehill Yeo Pit. Also a surprise Grey Plover over first thing. #patchbirding #birding #ukbirding #birds

#Patchbirding walk in better weather this evening. Not one but TWO BARN OWLS this evening hunting the same rural Godinton Park field. Not had that sight on the patch before. GC Grebe still in residence at Singleton Lake. #Godinton #SingletonLake
#Patchbirding after work. Was hoping for something new at the Hothfield waterbodies in the murky, damp weather but it was sadly a bit disappointing. Just 2 Little Grebes new in to the Waterfall Lake, plus Grey Wagtail & a Common Buzzard walking around a ploughed field.
Nice bonus last weekend for all the blank days on patch, with this cracking 1st w male Siberian Stonechat. Present for 6 days, but not seen since last Wednesday, only 2nd county record.
Feel guilty for not telling anyone?
Do I fuck. Wait til ye see what's coming next......ππ
Some nice bits from patch in the last few days, 23 Whooper Swans this morning, 3 Kingfishers, patch year β

Along the Beck this week, a Kingfisher (only the second on this patch this year), a Moorhen (first in months) and a Grey wagtail.
More Pied wagtails arrived and a Redwing flock fast and low over the park.
Just 27 spp for the week - quality not quantity.

A Merlin, perhaps the same bird as yesterday, ploughing the wave troughs off Girdle Ness this afternoon.

#Patchbirding after work⦠Kingfisher, Grey Wagtail, GC Grebe, 2 Grey Herons, 1 Green Sandpiper, Jays and the usual suspects around Singleton Lake & Rural Godinton Park.
Another day of westerlies, with some drizzle thrown in for good measure this morning. These four barnacle geese heading north over Tynemouth Pier kept the #patchbirding year list ticking over though. #nebirding
#PatchBirding ups and downs this evening. Far too much human disturbance at the Hothfield Water Bodiesβ¦ Stonechat pair & Little Egret noted though. Better on rural Godinton Park with a hunting Barn Owl & calling Tawny Owl, Common Gull, Pied Wagtails and a nice flock of 50+ Goldfinches. Charming π.
First day I've needed a jumper, and the first 13 Redwing at Weald CP today. Other highlights: at least 50 Gadwall on the conservation lake, Shoveler, 2 Little Grebe and a Grey Wagtail.
Also Small Copper and Clouded Yellow butterflies
Lovely whizz around some of Dartmoor's pits. 7 Pintail (11! yesterday - big no. for the area), 2 Redwing (1st of autumn), Common Sand (scarce in Oct), Firecrest, 2 Wigeon, 45+ Tufted, 18+ L Grebe, Snipe, 150+ Teal, Shelduck the highlights. #patchbirding #birding #ukbirding #birds
