@oneplacestudies.bsky.social I think we briefly discussed this on here a while back sog.org.uk/gold-library...

I don't see the Dictionary of English Surnames I have on OUP's site, but they have other surname books in print that cover the UK. There's also a place-name book for London by itself which may be of interest. #OnePlaceStudies

Not the most difficult, but I had a US Census record where the street name was an S followed by a long squiggle. A peek at a local city directory revealed that the name was Summer street.

(The most difficult record? Cow earmark records that I still haven't finished reading.) #OnePlaceStudies

#GenHour My top tip for decoding 20th century handwriting (e.g. census records in the USA): find a printed reference with the street names for the place you're studying. City directories street index w/heads of households = instant index. #OnePlaceStudies #LocalHistory

Glad you enjoyed it Jan! The recording of Jude’s talk is now available to catch up with (or enjoy again!) via the Members’ Area of our website. #OnePlaceStudies #GenHour

#GenHour Here's another topic I need to get back to for my husband's #FamilyHistory research and for the #OnePlaceStudies as well. There are Methodists in multiple branches of the family and possibly a few Catholics as well.

@packrat74.bsky.socialOct 15, 2026, 7:06 PM

Greetings #GenHour! How's your week been? I've managed to miss most of #AATP but hope to catch up with some of the talks via recordings.

But I did make it to Jude's brilliant talk at the Society for #OnePlaceStudies which was utterly delightful!

#genealogy I keep forgetting. You can *filter* for places in your own trees if you have ProTools. But as far as I can tell, that doesn't mean you can filter for a place on someone else's tree. #OnePlaceStudies.

People looking for #DNA connections need to look for places, too.

@packrat74.bsky.socialOct 12, 2026, 11:29 PM

#genealogy I took a break to explore a little, and what do you think I found? Lovely public trees with no sources on them. Also, it would be *really useful* if you could search someone else's (or your own) tree for a place as well as a person's name. But no. No support for #OnePlaceStudies for you!

Our website has profile pages for #OnePlaceStudies registered with us by our members, and the OPS Directory website (not affiliated with us) aims to list all those with an online presence, though I’m not sure when it was last updated. There must be quite a few other studies ‘flying under the radar.’

@oneplacestudies.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 11:44 AM

There are #OnePlaceStudies in Counties Clare, Louth, Mayo and Wicklow in Ireland, but not Cork so far. On @wikitree.bsky.social however there is Bandon, Cork One Place Study
. We would love to see more #OnePlaceStudies of places in Ireland!
