Worth noting that all four US-based researchers who won the Nobel prize this year were funded by #NSF at some point in their careers. IceCube (physics) is obvious, but all three of the others US researchers as well – Medicine and both economists.

Spent a sunny day last week digging a soil pit into an #esker in northern #Michigan as part of our #NSF funded #research project reconstructing the #Laurentide #IceSheet #glacial history of the #GreatLakes! The esker isn't huge, but the #LiDAR image shows it is there! #geology #earthscience

🧬 My favourite example is Thomas Brock's discovery of 🧫Thermus aquaticus from Yellowstone's hot springs leading to finding Taq polymerase laying the foundation of global #biotech industry.💰 However, #NSF grants funded these studies were mocked by then US Congressmen as a waste of taxpayer money!
