Which way now?

Wherever next, together.

Bakethin Nature Reserve in October

I think the crimson red compliments the hawthorn autumn leaves

More #TreeInquiry outside, as our poem for the week inspired us to look closely at the leaves we’ve been finding, to figure out what kind of tree they might be from. One student even found a match for the leaf around our poem. Good leaf sleuthing, friends! #NoticingNature #OutdoorLearning

Poem on chart paper inside the large outline of a leaf. A child’s hand holds up a leaf he found that matches the leaf outline.text reads:
“A Leaf
What does it look like?
How did it grow?
Which tree did it come from?
How do we know?”A child holds out a colourful bunch of leaves ahead of has gathered to bring to the “leaf identification station” (a mat with leaf guides). She has red, green, yellow and orange in her bunch.A child holds a bunch of golden brown oak leaves next to the image of the same kind of leaf (red oak) on the chart.A child holds a few maple leaves from different trees, and looks to find a match on the different leaf charts.

And then after Open House, we released the guest into the maple outside our classroom window. We wonder if we’ll see them again, when they’re able to disappear so easily in green leaves. #NoticingNature

Willowherb and Web.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Nature seems to whisper: behold beauty.

Some may see a tangle, a bloom bedraggled.

Yet I was captivated. Held tight, my gaze drawn into a labyrinth of light.

Perhaps beauty asks not only to be seen, but to be felt.

A vivid pink willowherb flower caught amongst fine spider silk, both flower and web covered in tiny early-morning water droplets. The threads criss-cross around the fading bloom against a softly blurred green background.

Just popping by with a Postcard from Nature.

From the wilds of Madrigal, with love.

Feathers, berries, seedheads, fur, fungi and other found treasures, gathered around marks brushed in shaggy inkcap ink — in Nature’s true hand, perhaps.

A handmade Postcard from Nature arranged on paper brushed with black shaggy inkcap ink, surrounded by feathers, berries, seedheads, fur, fungi and other found treasures gathered from the wilds of Madrigal. The handwritten words ‘From Nature, With Love’ appear on the postcard.

A fascinating tree by the walking path inspired us to look closely at the crabapple trees near our Kindergarten yard. It has big, red apples at the top, while the rest of tree is covered in crabapples. It inspired our choice of poem for the week.
#NoticingNature #TreeInquiry

An apple tree with large red apples on the top, larger leaves on those branches. Lower down on the majority of the branches are smaller leaves and tiny red crabapples. Five sets of hands held together; students showing crabapples they collected beneath a mixed-fruit apple tree. Poem on chart paper with a drawing of a large apple tree around the words of the poem. The word red is written in red throughout. Text reads:
“Red, Red
Red, red
What is red?
Apples are red, Tasty as can be.”

🦇 Our final #NoticingNature event of the year took us on a bat walk at Horspath Wildlife Conservation Site. Using bat detectors, we recorded common pipistrelles, serotines, Myotis species and possibly a brown long-eared bat too! Thanks to everyone who joined us this year.

Our poem of the week (Looking Closely) continues to inspire noticing, wondering & using descriptive language.
AJ came to show us an interesting leaf she found by the tennis court. Soon, other friends joined in to show and describe what they found around the yard. #NoticingNature #OutdoorLearning

Noticing Nature.

A sleepy bee amongst the sedum, gathering nectar with the last of the day’s energy.

I recognised something of myself in her.

Sleepy too, bumbling about a bit… but purposefully, in my own way.

Still noticing. Still making. Still seeking what nourishes me.

A sleepy-looking bumblebee nestles amongst a mass of tiny pink sedum flowers, its soft grey-brown body slightly hunched as it continues to forage for nectar.

Discovered during outdoor learning - it’s summer, and most of the trees are still bright green, but one maple by the playground is dropping red leaves! #NoticingNature #TreeInquiry

Four students stand in a circle, holding reddish-purple leaves together in the centre to compare the colour, size, shape and texture of each.
