The leader net guides the #salmon into "pockets" along its length. As the tide ebbs, the pockets are emptied, ensuring the fish are caught "fresh off the tide". Traditionally, traps were static and highly regulated by their owners and the local communities who fish them.

“Stake net” fishing is an ancient mobile method that uses a series of stakes to moor a leader net to the seabed. It's a mobile fish trap used for 100s of years, with its heyday in the 18th and 19th centuries in Scotland and Ireland.
