Herkenning: De vlinder heeft een spanwijdte van 6 tot 7 millimeter. De kop is vuilwit behaard en het borststuk is licht oranjebruin zonder duidelijke tekening. Op de voorvleugels bevindt zich een zilverachtige wortelstreep, waaraan een sterk gekromde zilveren dwarsband in het midden ligt; deze band is in zeldzame gevallen verbonden met de wortelstreep. Verder zijn er één of twee haakjes aan de achterrand en drie aan de voorrand zichtbaar. In het vleugelpuntgebied is een zwarte oogvlek aanwezig. In tegenstelling tot de klavervouwmot heeft deze soort geen witte vlek aan de achterrand nabij de voorvleugelbasis. Vliegtijd en gedrag: De vlinders vliegen meestal in twee generaties, van half juni tot augustus en van oktober tot mei. Levenswijze: De rupsen zijn actief van mei tot juni en van half juli tot april. Ze maken een mijn aan de onderzijde van het blad, waarbij ze het blad grotendeels samenvouwen en het meeste bladgroen wegvreten. De verpopping vindt plaats binnen deze mijn. De soort overwintert als rups, pop en vlinder. Voedsel: De rupsen leven op hopklaver (Medicago lupulina), luzerne (M. sativa), goudgele honingklaver (Melilotus altissimus) en witte honingklaver (M. albus), en soms ook op andere klaversoorten (Trifolium sp.).

Vliegtijd & gedrag Eind augustus-half november in één generatie. De vlinders komen op licht, maar vooral op smeer; ze bezoeken overrijpe bramen en bloemen van klimop. Rups: april-juni. De rups is vooral ´s nachts actief, maakt een cocon in de grond en verpopt zich daarin enkele weken later. De soort overwintert als ei op de waardplant. Habitat Loofbossen, struwelen, duinen en heiden. Waardplanten: Diverse loofbomen, waaronder eik, iep, berk en wilg; ook meidoorn, struikhei en bosbes.
