Detail of the painting "The Garden of Earthly Delights" of Hieronymus Bosch, painted in 1480-1490. A Small tortoiseshell is painted in the middle panel, it was clearly a well known species in the low countries.

My oldest butterfly observations date back to 1990 when I was 11 years old. I had numerous observations of small tortoiseshell, with 8 individuals as maximum on 20th july 1990. This picture from 2026 is from the Hautes Vosges because I didn't see one in Flanders this year... On the last Flemish butterfly red list we had to put the species in the category "endangered". The only reason it didn't end up in critically endangered is because it is present in surrounding regions and we can thus expect a savior effect.

As a validator on our citizen science platform waarnemingen.be I only found one confirmed caterpillar sighting of Small tortoiseshell in 2026 in Flanders. Most of the recent Belgian caterpillar sightings appear to come from the High Ardennes. This picture is from the Italian Alps from 2025, small tortoiseshell is finding the coolness in height, Flanders has become too hot.

Polyfage rupsen eten o.a. zuring en wilg. Waarom zo zeldzaam? Verklaart de autecologie dit? #SectieBink #Entomologie #ElkeDagEenInsect #ElkeDagEenRups #InsectenWeetje

Many bee and wasp species build their nests inside natural #deadwood cavities. But standing and lying deadwood have very different properties, influencing nesting success. 🪵🐝

The new (slightly revised) Red List of European Moths has been published by the EU. A summary and links to downloads can be found on our website. Moths play a vital role in ecosystems and there is also an important new document on how to plan for their conservation

Protecting threatened species and habitats is important, but is it effective?

Should conservation also should take larger scale 'process-based' approaches? Prof Lynn Dicks and co-authors argue they should.

I'm very proud of my Honours student, Tegan Edwards for publishing her first first-author paper this week in Ecology and Evolution!
She researched on Fiji's canopy-dwelling Hylaeus and worked incredibly hard to find these bees and to then untangle the story that followed...
