Happy Mosaic Monday!

Discovered in the 1930s, with a tree growing on top of it, the "shell" mosaic is one of the highlights of the Verulamium Museum collection.

Have you got a favourite Verulamium mosaic?

Before 1777, Falerio Picenus was a nearly perfectly-preserved #Roman town. Then Pius VI’s diggers arrived. For #MosaicMonday, we examine this Antonine-era leopard #emblema, stripped from a private #domus and treated as #spolia in the Vatican's Scala Simonetti. #AncientBluesky 🏺

ROMAN MOSAIC EMBLEMA OF A LEOPARD FROM FALERIO PICENUS, MID-LATE C2 CE. VATICAN MUSEUMS

A Roman mosaic panel featuring a leopard walking left, depicted with brown and ochre tesserae, framed by a guilloche border. Falerio Picenus was a pristine Roman town until 1777, when Pope Pius VI's excavators arrived to furnish the Museo Pio-Clementino. Stripped from a private domus and cemented into the Scala Simonetti as spolia, this emblema invites reflection. Devoid of Dionysian symbols, the leopard is pure physical threat. Yet, frozen in mosaic, it is utterly tamed. For the Roman diners reclining above it, this apex predator was a conversational set-piece about empire, bringing the wild safely into the domestic sphere. Ultimately, the true predator was not the leopard, but the papal excavators. The homeowners were safe from the beast beneath their feet, but Falerio Picenus had no protection from the C18 diggers who tore the town apart to feed the Vatican collections.

Party time....
Triumphant young winged Dionysus (or Cupid?) arrives in celebratory mode w wreath of vine leaves, cup of wine, riding a lion-headed tiger.

#Roman emblema from a triclinium in House of the Faun, #Pompeii. Bordered with tragic masks and garlands.
In MANN, Naples

A scene of a young winged god - probably Dionysus - on the back of a tiger with a lion's head. Gripping the harness of the beast, he wears a garland of fruit and leaves on his head and holds a large basin of wine.
This central image is bounded by an elaborate series of garlands and dramatic masks, all entertwined.
Outside of this is a wavy border in dark red and off-white.

For this #MosaicMonday, a strip of guilloche looking like mosaic but actually painted. This is the piece I mentioned in the recent post about mosaicists/painters. In Winchester City Museum.
#AncientBlueSky🏺

A fragment resembling Roman mosaic. It shows two strips of simple guilloche vertically side by side with plain tessellation in white to left and right, and a strip of red on the extreme right.

✨Cave Canem✨ We’re not saying this excellent doggo is particularly dangerous, but they are guarding the Casa di Paquius Proculus in Pompeii, so best be careful! Also this doggo comes with a labrys (double axe) and a shield and spear!

This mosaic comes from the Casa di Paquius Proculus in Pompeii. The mosaic depicts a black dog with a red collar chained to a pillar. Also depicted are what look like a labrys (double axe) and a shield and spear.

Better photos of the central motif from the House of Dionysus on Delos, the original of which is in the Mykonos Archaeological Museum. The tesserae on this are *minuscule* - my hand for reference (no, I was not touching it!) Happy #mosaicmonday everyone 😁 #ancientBluesky

A very fine mosaic showing a winged Dionysus riding a tiger, with motifs of grapes and a wine cupDetail of the face. The tesserae are absolutely tiny, maybe 1-2mm eachClose up of the wine cup with my hand for scale. It looks like I'm touching it but I'm not, honest!

These are a real treat. Winter, in particular, is worth a zoom: she looks so cold and tiny on her handsome boar. The seasonal identity of Spring and Winter is reinforced by their animals - they traditionally represent these seasons.
