And he created her directly. He must have known what she’d become—and if Cain had the right idea, she might very well be Gaudium. It could be her job to kill Cain.” “Or it could be her job to go around performing magic shows with her new powers,” Lucifer said. “We have literally no way of knowing what Dad intended. Just because Cain happens to be here wanting to die doesn’t mean that it’s in any way connected to why she was born.” Chloe added, “And I’m certainly not going to kill someone just because God says I should.” “What if it’s because of Lucifer?” Dan said. Everyone swung around to look at him. He faltered, but went on. “Look, I don’t really understand what Gaudium is supposed to be or how Chloe could become some legend that freaking angels have. But you said it’s about dealing with beings that aren’t human, right?” “Supposedly,” Lucifer said, glancing at Amenadiel. “Unless that part has changed over the millennia.” Amenadiel shook his head. “Not really. It’s barely mentioned anymore—mostly just something that gets brought up in a joke, like when Jophiel plays a prank and someone says they wished Gaudium would show up just for him.” Dan said, “So then what if her purpose is to handle Lucifer? I mean…” He gestured in Lucifer’s direction. “He’s the devil, and he left hell. And the two of you met first. Maybe she was born for him, just… just not to…” “Fall in love and have incredible, mind-blowing sex?” Lucifer suggested. Chloe elbowed him, and he winced, but she didn’t feel guilty in the slightest. “That is quite a difference from trying to send me back to hell.” “But could she?” Dan said, looking intensely uncomfortable.

He was already smiling when she opened her eyes. They settled on his face, and then she smiled, too. “Hi.” “Good morning again, love.” He kissed the top of her head. Her eyes shone at that. “Did you get more sleep? What time is it?” “Yes, and just past ten.” “Trixie isn’t up yet?” “Not that I heard.” “Mmm. I should go check on her, make breakfast…” “For me as well, yes? Since I do believe you threatened to pamper me all day.” Her smile only grew. “Yes. For you, too.” She started to get up, which left Lucifer torn, because he didn’t want her to. He would have been fine with the two of them staying in bed like that all day, whether it meant getting breakfast or not. He had to resist the urge to pull her back down, missing her warmth the moment she moved away from him. If not for Trixie, he might have insisted on another hour under the covers together. “What do you want to eat?” she asked, running her hand over her hair to smooth it out. “Anything in particular?” “Whatever you’d like is fine. Just make it extra special for me.” He beamed at her, lounging languidly back to emphasize how much he was willing to be taken care of today. “You know, that’s not as specific a request as you might think. Deciding to burn your toast or add a bucket of salt to your eggs would also count as making it special.” He just grinned lazily up at her. “I don’t think you’ll do anything like that, since you love me now.” Chloe snorted. “Yeah, that doesn’t mean never doing anything to annoy you. Since you’re new to the concept, let me be the first to tell you that people in love intentionally annoy each other sometimes. You should know, really. You’ve already been accomplished at doing both whether you realized it or not.” He laughed. “Annoy you, maybe, but ruin perfectly good eggs for no reason? Now that, I’d never do.”

Lucifer and Chloe snugglingThe light of the full moon shines through the curtains of the penthouse, throwing a stripe of rumpled bedding into harsh relief. The pool of silver from it steadily shifts as the minutes tick away, each moment illuminating a new sliver of his life while sending another into shadow, reminding him that soon he will no longer live here, but in the home he and Chloe purchased in Santa Monica. It’s still new. This thing—this them, but it has a shape he is learning to wrap his tongue around. Now the shape will have a house full of the three—soon to be four—of them. It feels odd to move while the oddness itself feels odd as well. To leave the penthouse is to leave the first home he chose for himself. But what is a handful of years in one place compared to eons with no home at all? To move should be easy. And he isn’t selling his place, but simply acknowledging that it’s not the best place for children. Beside him in the bed Chloe turns, making a small grumbling noise as she attempts to get comfortable. Though Lucifer can’t see it now, her stomach is round with visible proof of their daughter, and he hopes he is doing the right thing, while fearing he is not. How can he, the Devil, be a dad? What does he know of parenting or of tiny urchins? Of breaking time loops? In the light of day, Chloe's steadfast faith in him—in them—and her reminders that he won’t be alone are enough to allay most of his misgivings. He will have Chloe and Beatrice. They are a family, soon to be a larger one. While it is another oddness to apply the word family to him after so long without, it’s one which fills him with warmth. At night, however, he worries.
