Macular hole in right eye, surgery needed in both, an unexpected diagnosis today.
Stumbling out of the opticians, pupils fully dilated from testing, I decided to stick with the planned #PatchBirding & to train my left as my scope eye.

A late afternoon visit to the patch today and clearly an arrival of thrushes, with lots of rustling leaf litter and a carpet of Blackbirds and Redwings at Newton Pool.

There was a dribble of birds arriving in off the sea at Low Newton this morning, 16 Redwings + a handful of Blackbirds, 2 Reed Buntings, 4 Chaffinch and 5 Dunnocks !

Barnacle Geese were still moving north in reasonable numbers + 3 groups of Whooper Swans south.

That time again - Port Solent (top of Portsmouth Harbour) WeBS by bus! The gulls were joined by singles of Mute Swan, Little Egret, and Great Crested Grebe.
@webs-gsmp.bsky.social #LowCarbonBirding

Taken from the bus near the front with glass doors and good visibility at the front. There is a path, grass and then the harbour with some glare from the sun. In the distance there are trees and Portchester Castle.

This late Cuckoo has been at Low Newton for the last few days. A fearless juvenile, more concerned with finding caterpillars than the people stood nearby watching it. At one point it landed right at my feet to pluck a caterpillar out of the grass, amazing !

Thousands of Barnacle Geese pouring north past Low Newton this afternoon. In amongst them a leucistic bird and a Ruddy Shelduck !

Despite the blue skies and westerlies a few birds were arriving this morning, 2 Brambling, 2 Chaffinch and 4 Siskin in off the sea + 6 Wheatears between Football Hole and Low Newton. Whooper Swans were on the move, 40+ south, 1 north + the Cuckoo was still at Low Newton

Chinstrap Penguins have declined markedly & rapidly as climate change warms the oceans & disrupts their food supply.

Yet RSPB, BirdLife, British Birds etc, still support & promote a Birdfair that sells ultra high carbon tours to Antarctica.

The time for change has long passed.

For today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme #BlueSkies; any bird against a blue sky.

Here are a Bee-Eater, a kestrel and a buzzard.
#LowCarbonBirding
#ECK #birdphotography #birdsofbluesky #naturephotography #BlueskyMonday

A bee-eater is flying through the air and appears to be soaring upward. Its wings are tucked behind its body; they are orange with black edges, and the sun seems to be shining through them. Its belly is turquoise, its beak is yellow, its forehead is white, and it has a black eye patch. In the background is a blue sky.The Beige photographs a kestrel with outstretched wings in the sky. The brown bird with a black beak is looking down and hovering. The sky is blue.A buzzard flies straight toward the viewer captured from below against the blue sky. It is clearly hunting and is staring intently at the ground. You can see its eyes, its brown-beige plumage, and individual feathers on its wings, with its talons outstretched.

PS fun Kent factoid. Beeching one of the two most famous people born on the Isle of Sheppey (right up there alongside Rod Hull).

Hobbies? Not a rail enthusiast, didn't like sport. But really enjoyed the countryside.

(Ah, if only he'd tried #lowcarbonbirding the n Kent marshes by train 😉)

Returned to Titchfield Haven after a couple of weeks break. Trickles of Meadow Pipits, Skylarks and hirundines overhead - the latter swirling over the river! View from the new VC is pretty good, and turned out nice once fog cleared #LowCarbonBirding #PWC2026

Reedbed either side of the river and a tall tree. It is sunny.Flat calm sea. Low mist means no island visible but it is otherwise sunny. Two wooden groynes on the beach

A train trip to and cycle back from Dawlish W today. Highlight was fishing Osprey off the Warren. 25+ R Plover, 4 Grey Plover, 2 Sand T, Med Gull, 5+ Sanderling & 3 Swallow. Marsh Garrier, Kingfisher and 13 Cattle Egret #LowCarbonBirding . More on Devon birds www.devonbirds.org/bird-sightin...

Had a walk around the patch yesterday, still loads of continental Song Thrushes about. At the bird crops, no sign of the Little Bunting but some lovely views of Reed Bunting. 3 Yellow-browed Warblers and a Brambling at the Tin Church.

Thanks to @helenbennett.bsky.social for #BirdOfTheDay #BestBeaks

With a beak, one can tap, call out, sing, catch things, and look good like these five guys.

Unexpected bird of the day - JAY in off the sea ! I nearly missed it too, it was flying behind me, managed to grab a pic of its arse as it flew off inland. Only my third ever patch Jay, regular a few miles inland but rarer than Pallas's Warbler here !

Did find one the nastiest lengths of cycle path I've seen. There are hidden tribes down some of those ruts.

If I see a library, I go in and support.

Spotted a bit on #LowCarbonBirding by #train up on station notice board 👍

Even an old map of the SECR up of the auto doors of the Int'l station☺️

Nice finish to the afternoon listening to a Yellow-browed Warbler, found earlier by James Hutchison at Milton CP. My third in Cambs, all by bike. Hope it stays and I can see it next time! #LowCarbonBirding
