Thankfully, she had not been asked to lead the prayers. That was Kallista's responsibility instead, one she performed with grave seriousness. When she got to the final hymn, Seraphina's Lament, Kallista's deep alto voice carried her precise pronunciation to Geni's ear. Usually Geni would be brought to a blubbering wreck at this point in any funeral ceremony. Instead, hearing someone singing the actual correct ancient Iunian gave her enough pause to pique her intellectual curiosity instead of her sentimentality. Strange: even many in the clergy would sing the bastardised modern version. How did Kallista come to know the correct version? A Navy tradition, perhaps, or a thoroughness all her own?

Bad as he was at it sometimes, Wali always got the sound just right after the first try. Even he was on the hunt? What was going on?
