keep it grounded in reality, IMO. the most horrifying aspects of war are the ones that happen day-to-day, as a regular feature of it as a concept.
the most disturbed I've ever been by a war-related piece of fictional media lately was the audio from mission 19 of Ace Combat 8.
Sorry for passing the past few. They've been triggering to me (I have PTSD) and I have been dealing with some blowback from medication changes, so haven't felt as social.
I hope everyone else had a good time, and look forward, hopefully, to the next #HorrorWritersChat
#HorrorWritersChat I almost forgot! These are war stories and not supernatural horror, but everyone here may want to read about the Dreadnought Hoax (pre WWI - involved writer Virginia Woolf) and the Dam Busters (WWII). Both are fascinating and not depressing. The Dam Busters was made into a movie.

WWI battlefield setting. A nurse moving through the aftermath, looking for survivors to help finds that some of the soldiers aren't dead, but they aren't exactly alive either. If she helps them, they're coming for vengeance. Does she help? #HorrorWritersChat
That's why I don't like war stories. They are already horror. What more can I add? I did have an idea once about vampires and battlefields that I never wrote. #horrorwriterschat
I do love it when the situation is already horrible and something supernatural shows up to make it even worse. In a war story, probably what the MC thought was help on the way turns out to be a fresh horror of a whole new level. #HorrorWritersChat
Lots of horror explores the aftermath of trauma. I haven't written about war as the traumatizing event specifically so far, but I imagine I'd focus on the individual's experience--what they remember and what they refuse to re-examine. #HorrorWritersChat
Hi #HorrorWritersChat I'm late, but determined to participate this week! I'm Samantha, multi-genre writer. My horror is generally short and explores many different subgenres. I have an addiction to writing for anthologies because I'm a sucker for a great theme. For the Q: Does Pan's Labyrinth count?
Eff me I think I know why it’s happening to Jonas, and how he has to get out of it, and maybe I wanna write this shit. 👀
Thanks Gree. So thought-provoking.
As I said previously, I don't tend to cover war much. But Parch Marks is set in the aftermath of climate collapse and a catastrophic civil war in Britain. Atrocities committed form an important part of the plot.

“Liberation Day”
It’s November, 1916, and Jonas is terrified— he’s to deploy at the Battle of the Somme. But as horrifying as the bloody battlefield is, nothing can prepare him for the next morning:
When he wakes to his general telling him they’re about to deploy at the Somme.
A surreal story abruptly switching between a modern, peaceful setting and a historical war. The POV character is a forgotten ghost of a war, unable to move on and with hallucinatory poltergeist episodes. They have to remember their life with a psychopomp before killing someone…
