Black-tailed #godwits #grutto #skries eat earthworms before nesting period and leatherjackets (Tipulid larvae) thereafter.

This is a consequence of soils drying out (reducing earthworm availability) and leatherjackets growing in size across summer season.

One more from the archives for #BirdOfTheDay theme of #waders Bar-tailed Godwit (Limosa lapponica). An uncommon passage bird in Hungary but this year there have been many more than usual. Likely due to the summer drought and the consequent low water levels. #BirdingHungary #shorebirds #godwits

A large group of Lapwings and Black-tailed Godwits all took to the air together at Mudeford Bay, Christchurch, last weekend. They barely moved when two White-tailed Eagles arrived, but when a Peregrine flew over, all hell broke loose! #birdphotography #birds #dorsetwildlife #Godwits #lapwings

Nice close views of waders at Mudeford Quay this morning, like this Black tailed Godwit. #p1000 #birdwatching #birdphotography #birds #dorsetwildlife #Godwits

When it's chow time, the godwits don't fool around. They are focused! 🍽️ 😋 #BirdingHungary #shorebirdds #waders #godwits

That colour-ringed Black-tailed Godwit (Limosa limosa) I saw last weekend was still at the same location today. This photo is thru my scope. #BirdingHungary #godwits #shorebirds #waders #FallMigration2026

Short vid of last weekend's mystery Black-tailed Godwit (Limosa limosa). Bigger and taller than the Bar-tailed Godwit but not the biggest of the 4 godwit species. That distinction belongs to the Marbled Godwit. #BirdingHungary #shorebirds #waders #godwits

Phonescope image of the Polish ringed Black-tailed Godwit from the weekend. The nerve of this bird... running around with no ID. 👮 🚔 😂 Check out that crazy beak. Impossible to preen its neck unless it gets another godwit to do it. 😀 #BirdingHungary #godwits #WaderWednesday #shorebirds #waders

Polish color-ringed Black-tailed Godwit. Couldn't get details because there was no designation. Odd. Usually you can tell if the flag has been soiled, but this black flag was a consistent uniform black on both sides with no numbers, not even partial. #BirdingHungary #shorebirds #godwits #waders

One of my fav #shorebirds ... Bar-tailed Godwit (Limosa lapponica) in the morning sun. Uncommon passage bird in Hungary. The ones in Europe don't migrate quite as far as the Pacific version, but still an impressive traveller. #BirdingHungary #BirdsSeenIn2026 #WaderWednesday #waders #godwits
