FUNNY GOD Page 86 …dragon slaying — the anima predominates for men and the animus predominates for women. However, on the perinatal level and beyond it, that is to say, on the transpersonal level, all humans have a Divinity with predominantly feminine characteristics, that is to say, a sort of female anima figure for both genders, representing the Divinity within ourselves we are cut off from at birth, because of the pain of birth. “No” Is the Answer to “A Question of Balance” This Divine Within, which we separate from at birth, is naturally associated with our mothers, within whom we resided in the womb, for both women and men. So it is feminine for both genders. And for both, it is projected outside oneself, throughout life. It arises, for a man initially, as the feminine beloved or “soul-mate” and is embodied in his anima. For a woman, the Divine Feminine, the representative of Love, is projected on the male beloved, at the point after the first task of uniting with the animus has been accomplished. It is no coincidence that this kind of “feminine” man, who might, as often happens for some women, be seen in a gay friend, is more attractive to more evolved women than the typical “macho” man.

Simply put, the re-integration of the culturally repressed aspect of self that has qualities of the opposite gender (the animus or anima) cannot compare to the later and more comprehensive re- integration of the perinatally repressed Divinity within (the Goddess or Divine Feminine). No, women and men are both split off from an unconscious that is psychologically characterized as feminine. However, women have been encouraged, in order to fit with the thinking of Jungians in their efforts at enforcing symmetry and consistent with their masculine, solar theology, to think of their unconscious in predominantly masculine ways, as animus. How self-serving for men, in a solar (masculinized) theology, to give a woman’s unexpressed masculine side the same status of a God (a “Divine Masculine”) as the actual Divinity, which for men and women in a patriarchy is distinctively feminine and is in severe contrast to its predominantly masculine cultural context. COMMON MADNESS AND THE DIVINE FEMININE Page 85 …women and men. An unacknowledged aspect of this is that since women, as well as men, are born of women (mothers) this pre-birth Divinity is feminine for woman as well as men, for it is colored by the fact that its earliest experience in life happened inside a woman (mother). Since women lose their connection with Divinity equally, as men, at birth, it is no wonder that the Divine Feminine — having qualities identical or at least reminiscent of those of the anima in men — plays so strongly in women’s psyches as well. This is regardless of how much Jungians try to make the animus of the female ... the male qualities in the woman that are repressed ... to be on a par with the male’s anima. Another way of saying this is that the feminine/the Goddess is repressed in both women and men, so both genders feel the need to unite with a feminine within themselves. For men, this feminine appears initially as an anima. Whereas, the animus in women is merely the repressed masculine aspects of the personality, and its integration, while important, especially at earlier stages, cannot compare to the more comprehensive integration of “feminine” elements later on, characterized by the Goddess or the Divine Feminine.

Our Deepest Self Is Feminine ... for Men and Women To begin, in Jungian psychology the anima is, for the man, the female symbol of all his repressed feelings, spirituality ... all his “feminine” qualities. But it is related to the more encompassing Divine Feminine which exists in men and women. Let me explain. The Divine Feminine, or Goddess, is the connection with Divinity that we lose because of the pain of birth; it is rooted in our experience in the womb. It is the “heart,” the Love that new-agers make so much about; it is the “one Love,” the “one heart,” that activists look to. It rises up in one, once one has felt through one’s painful birth feelings ... it is on the other side of them; one says that one’s “heart” opens. Since the Divinity, which one still has in the womb, before birth, is feeling, comfort, direction, guidance, and love, so the Divine Feminine is all those things. Encountering and reuniting with the Goddess involves a going beyond the trauma of birth in one’s spiritual and personal development. This world consisting only of light and sunshine is an impossibility, however. So solar theologies require of their adherents a delusional life in which they are constantly forced to rearrange the meanings of the reality they experience to fit into a preconceived system of belief, which is a fantasy that seeks the denial of the suffering and darkness of life. By contrast, lunar theologies have a fuller understanding that darkness is not overcome by ignoring it or seeking to murder it without looking at it (Perseus). Rather evil and suffering are resolved only by looking deeply into them, “embracing” them, seeking to understand them, and transforming them. Thus the light (the moon) is discovered in the midst of darkness (the night) in the same way that there is a seed of light in the midst of darkness in the Tao symbol. FUNNY GOD Page 84 For starters, one might ask, what are the meanings of anima and Divine Feminine, mentioned above. Beyond that, how do they relate to our new understandings of birth and death, the perinatal and the matriarchy, and to the spiritual development of women, as well as men. For many reasons, chief among which is the fact that the Divinity Within, the Divine Feminine, plays a big part in lunar theologies, a funny-god way, and the necessary hero of modern times, it is important to have a clear understanding of its meaning. Since I have been referring to the anima in men here, which, like the Divine Feminine, has feminine characteristics, the need to distinguish and understand the two concepts is at hand. THE TAO OF FUNNY GOD, MATRIARCHY, AND LUNAR THEOLOGIES Page 59 Coinciding with this, they cling to one fiction of positive thinking, applicable to the inner self, and another, for the outside world, that law and order can be imposed from without; one can “clean up the streets” by moving the desperate out of one’s sight; the messiness of Nature can be covered up by asphalt and lawns and anything remaining strangled to death with Roundup and Weed-B- Gon; and so on. Underlying these beliefs is the assumption that were it not for bad guys and evil ones ... or dirty, smelly, buggy, slimy, and disgusting Nature ... life would (and should) be “happily ever after.” Suffering is not a corrective in life ... an aspect of learning ... it is some foreign element inserted into the plan of God. Since it cannot be of God, there must be a devil doing it. The body and Nature are ceded to Satan as well, putting one at odds and at war with oneself and one’s environment. One is not to learn from one’s “sins” but to have them atoned for and removed by an outside force ... a special emissary of the Divine ... a son of God? ... well that would be nice. Healing and wisdom do not arise from within, catalyzed by the exigencies of life, they are imposed from without: Priests and physicians, boys in blue and judges and soldiers are among the many authorities responsible for dispelling darkness in one’s life and upon whom one is dependent. Life would be heaven if they would, once and for all, just win!

On the other hand, solar theologies divide the world in two — into darkness and light, which are irreconcilable. The world is comprised of the sacred and the profane. Indeed, earthly existence is not just deluded, it is seen as corrupt and foul, even at times evil, in its nature. The only real good or light is separate from it, transcendent, is a heaven with no elements of the veil of darkness that is existence on Earth. Solar theologies therefore seek to repress all darkness within, and they struggle to eliminate and destroy all the darkness and discomforts of life without ... to bring their deluded idea of heaven to earth. They try to live in a world without darkness or shadows, one only of light ... thus a solar one, a daytime one. Their milky white heavens are without contrast ... and boring. Their earths are despised and polluted, tortured and raped to extract their resources, with as little importance to them as a garbage dump, for “in the sweet bye and bye” the Earth will be tossed aside as easily as a Dixie cup after one has drunk up. For they are on their raft made of luggage, indicating the paltry number of things — physical but also emotional “baggage” — that are required to be taken along on the journey of life, or, more accurately, on the stormy and crooked path to self. It is nighttime, and again, dominating the starlit sky there is a huge image of a moon. More about the meaning of this scene in just a little bit, but for now, let us focus on the meaning of a lunar theology that these two striking scenes are indicating. Lunar Theologies, Solar Theologies What is the meaning of lunar in lunar theology? A lunar theology is not in denial of the darkness of life ... it acknowledges, just like a night scene with a full moon, that life is lived in darkness — of our true selves and the nature of reality — but that it contains a guiding light, a reflection of the Divine (the moon). As humans we find ourselves in a deluded state relative to the Divine, in ignorance and separate, but physical reality is metaphor of the Divine, constantly revealing Itself to us and guiding us hOMe. The Divine is immanent in Nature and ready to reveal Itself to us in any of the moments we will allow It to.

One accepts the “process” as being what is all important. It is not the goal that is crucial, authorities are not needed, one cannot do it for anyone else. It focuses on Divinity as being inherent, which means that one reaches the truth on one’s own, one is healed by surrender not by fee to a professional. THE TAO OF FUNNY GOD, MATRIARCHY, AND LUNAR THEOLOGIES Page 57 Then he finishes with words that say everything, “I forgot ... how BIG!” “Thank you.” “Thank you for my life.” So, this scene is a clue to the lunar theology the movie portrays, but it shows again the rising of awareness of the Divine in all these matriarchal and lunar ways — through observation of Nature (the moon); as a result of experience of life and suffering; arising only when one has surrendered and struggled no more; and occurring when one’s Ego has been stripped down sufficiently by the exigencies of life to be able to let it in (the hero’s emaciated self, the sinking of the luxury yacht). It says that one becomes transformed when one’s Ego has been diminished sufficiently and one can allow the process to have its way totally. One accepts the “process” as being what is all important. It is not the goal that is crucial, authorities are not needed, one cannot do it for anyone else. It focuses on Divinity as being inherent, which means that one reaches the truth on one’s own, one is healed by surrender not by fee to a professional.
