If the Navier-Stokes Millennium Prize problem has been resolved, what changes for physics and what does not?

Communications Physics published today an Editorial by our Editorial Board Member Amin Doostmohammadi discussing exactly that.

How does a flow on a rotating planet turn from regular to chaotic? With Francesco Carbone of Italy's National Research Council, in PLOS ONE (@plosone.org, 2024), we kept only five interacting waves and found two different roads to chaos. 🧵 #FluidDynamics #ChaosTheory

Announcement card of PLOS ONE for the research article "Route to chaos and resonant triads interaction in a truncated rotating nonlinear shallow-water model" by Francesco Carbone and Denys Dutykh, DOI 10.1371/journal.pone.0305534. Beside the title, figures of the paper: the five wave vectors with the pushed one marked by a red star, the mean period of the motion falling as the force grows, and six loops of the motion in a space of energies, from a single loop to a tangle.

The so-called Feynman sprinkler problem has long vexed physicists. If you reverse a standard sprinkler with S-shaped arms by sucking water into it, will it turn and, if so, in what direction? #fluiddynamics

When a flow turns unstable, do the particles in it follow the vortices? Multiscale X-ray scatter microscopy says it depends: graphene oxide platelets track the flow, while rod-like cellulose nanocrystals show fast orientational motion correlated with the vortex turnover.

How do you produce a single droplet on the surface of a liquid bath?
Stretch a liquid filament with a spring-loaded probe. Stretch it too far, and it breaks into multiple drops; not far enough & no drop forms.

Can a solitary wave cross a patch of rotating liquid and emerge unchanged? With Matthew Hunt we studied waves on a conducting liquid under an electric field, when the liquid carries vorticity. Mathematical Methods in the Applied Sciences, 2026 (@wiley.com) 🧵 #FluidDynamics

Banner of the journal Mathematical Methods in the Applied Sciences (Wiley), volume 49, issue 7, pages 7068 to 7081, 2026, open access: the research article "Free surface waves in electrohydrodynamics with a prescribed vorticity distribution" by M. J. Hunt and D. Dutykh, beside one of its figures, the surface above a vortex patch at the final time and its evolution in space and time, with a narrow dip above the patch and a train of waves running to the right. Here, charged droplets break down the shield itself: a Teflon #coating develops damage, exposing the copper beneath.

How should future protective surfaces respond to charged water?

Feynman called water waves “the worst possible example” of waves: “they have all the complications that waves can have.” With Didier Clamond and Dimitrios Mitsotakis, we wrote an open-access monograph on modelling them with variational principles (IAHR, 2024). 🧵 #FluidDynamics
