Spot-winged Stillness

Here's a still photo of a dragonfly perched near the water's edge. The dragonfly is a common whitetail (Plathemis lydia). ...

"The image depicts a dragonfly perched delicately on the tip of a rusty, weathered metal rod. The dragonfly’s iridescent wings catch the light, creating a striking contrast against the muted background of water. The blurred green plant in the foreground adds a natural touch. Overall, it’s a captivating scene that balances clarity and softness." - Microsoft Copilot

Here's the source of the #Dragonfly octocopter 3-D printable model.

We have Fairmont State University, and Gary Allen Backus of Backus Creative Imaging, to thank for cooking up this excellent outreach item.

@jhuapl.bsky.social has kindly made a printable #Dragonfly model available. I've been showing it off as I explain why NASA is building a whirlybird to send to Titan.

Hat tip to the Aurora (IL) Public Library Makerspace for printing me a copy.

My hand, holding an orange plastic model of the Dragonfly rotorcraft drone. It has a generally rectangular fuselage with four arms projecting from its sides, each arm supporting two three-bladed rotors on a common axis; in all, an octocopter. The craft rests on a pair of outrigger skids beneath its fuselage. At its rear are stubby fins, flanking the cylinder containing its radioisotope generator. In front, a curved forebody rises above the rest of the fuselage. Atop its midsection is a flat circular high-gain antenna which can swivel to aim at Earth. Photo copyright 2026 by William S. Higgins. Model printed by courtesy of Aurora Public Library Makerspace in Aurora, Illinois.

Saw a Dragonfly perched on a dead sunflower head. Google tells me it's likely a Violet Dropwing.

It’s #October, but because of the unseasonably warm weather, we still have the odd #dragonfly flitting about. #InsectThursday #Insects #Invertebrates #Dragonflies #Fall #PNW #Nature #Photography #GoOutside #Breathe #Notice #Don’tGiveUp

Closeup of a paddle-tailed darner dragonfly clinging to a pale green reed with its spiky black legs. It’s got sky blue and dark brown and black “mosaic” patterns on its long abdomen and thorax, it’s lacy black and clear wings are shining in the late afternoon sun, and its eyes are also sky blue with a swath of black. It’s facing upwards. We found this fellow by a pond in eastern Idaho in the autumn, several years ago.

Still love this picture I took a couple of years ago at Whitby Nature Reserve in Lincolnshire. #Dragonfly

Mixed news for UK #dragonfly fans. Several new breeding species recently, but now 7 of the established ones endangered, up from 4. (The 8th endangered species was previously extinct in the UK but is trying to recolonise.)

👍
Once upon a time in #EastKilbride there was a pond; green space that accumulated water by constant raining in EK
I explored it one day & a #dragonfly came to me; curious buzzing aroon me amongst the reeds.
Today the pond is gone.
Dragonfly no more.
Filled in by tarmac for Warehouses.

This dragonfly is a Wandering Glider (Pantala flavescens). It was preening its tarsus while resting on a branch.

no advanced #engineering, #3D / #4D print #technology or #AI can make anything that can rival the wings of a humble #dragonfly. and it's pretty cool, there is such a thing, as the Worldwide Dragonfly Association.
