Ron Hogan is an example of someone
making the Dàoist teachings their own.

Sections 1-3 are fine, but he doesn’t understand
the ontological context of section 4
(as Chen explains),
& presents it as ethical teaching,
which works well as such anyway. 😁

#Daoism #DaoDeJing 51

DaoDeJing 51 Ron Hogan Tao is the source of all living things, and they are nourished by Tao's power. They are influenced by the other living things around them, and they are shaped by their circumstances. Everything respects Tao and honors its power. That's just the way it is. Tao gives life to all things, and its power watches out for them, cares for them, helps them grow, protects them, and comforts them. Create something without holding on to it. Do the work without expecting credit for it. Lead people without giving them orders. That's the secret of the power of Tao. Link: https://terebess.hu/english/tao/ron.html#Kap51

#DaoDeJing, Pt 2: De ch 51/81

This chapter concerns the providential powers
of Dao & de in the life cycle of every being,
especially de as the ever-supporting
& yet self-effacing presence in the world.

DaoDeJing 51 Ellen Chen 1. Dao gives birth, De rears, Things shape, Circumstances complete. 2. Therefore the ten thousand things, None do not respect Dao and treasure de. Dao is respected, De is treasured, Not by decree, But by spontaneity. 3. Therefore Dao gives birth, De keeps, grows, nurtures, matures, ripens, covers and buries. 4. To give birth without possession, To act without holding on to, To grow without lording over, This is called the dark de. I think Ron Hogan's tr rocks.

It also calls out later #Daoist immortality fixations.
Founders of wisdom streams build sea kayaks
& leave their natural harbours.
Over the centuries followers lose the historical context
& build cruise ships instead of kayaks.
Context is crucial.
#Daoism #DaoDeJing 50

DaoDeJing 50 Ron Hogan People who look for the secret of long life wind up dead. Their bodies are the focus of their lives and the source of their death, because they think a healthy body is all there is to life. Lao Tzu used to say a man who truly understood life could walk through the jungle without fear or across a battlefield without armor, totally unarmed. Wild animals and weapons couldn't kill him. I know, I know: what the hell does that mean? "Well, he couldn't be killed," Lao Tzu said, "because his body wasn't where he kept his death." Link: https://terebess.hu/english/tao/ron.html#Kap50

Ellen Chen (1989, p.173)

What we have in this passage is the life of the round,
constituted by this dynamic process
of coming to be & ceasing to be.
Life & death are opposites that alternate with each other;
what has life pushes on toward death
so that new life can come to be.

#DaoDeJing 50/81

1st stanza concerns ordinary mortals who die;
2nd describes those who are deathless.
What is deathless is the unceasing life-producing activity.
The person at one with this unceasing creativity is immortal.
Chen p.173

DaoDeJing 50 Ellen Chen 1. From coming out to life to going back to death: Those companions of life, They are one-third; Those companions of death, They are one-third; Those living but moving toward the place of death, They are also one-third. Why? Because of the intense life-producing activity. 2. I have heard that one who knows how to nourish life, On land meets no tigers or wild buffaloes, In battle needs to wear no armors or weapons, A wild buffalo has nowhere to butt its horns, A tiger has nowhere to sink its claws, A weapon has nowhere to enter its blade. Why? Because such a one has no place of death. Link: https://terebess.hu/english/tao/e-m-chen.html#Kap50 Derek Lin, tr. & comment: https://terebess.hu/english/tao/DerekLin.html#Kap50

Ron Hogan's tr.

Conservatives grade their love from near to far;
those outside their circle "deserve" nothing.

Today we want the fascists to receive
justice for their lawlessness.
Make it so. But true justice is also restorative.
Redemptive justice is hard; be guided by Dao.

DaoDeJing 48 Ron Hogan The Masters don't make up their minds. They turn their thoughts to other people. They are good to good people, and they're good to bad people. This is real goodness. They have faith in the faithful, and they have faith in the unfaithful. This is real faith. A Master throws himself into the world completely, forgetting everything he's been told. People pay attention to him because he lives a life of child-like wonder. Link: https://terebess.hu/english/tao/ron.html#Kap49

Ellen Chen (1989, p.171, abbr.)

This deep religious insight,
that the ground of all beings accepts
both the good and the not good,
both the trustworthy and the untrustworthy,
was beautifully expressed by Jesus:

#Daoism #DaoDeJing 49

Matthew 5: 43-48 Jesus of Nazareth You have heard that it was said, “You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.” But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

#DaoDeJing 49

On the learned ignorance of the sage.
The sage, by returning to the mind of the infant,
not distinguishing between the good & the not good,
re-educates his people to become like children again.

DaoDeJing 49 Ellen Chen 1. The sage has no set mind, He takes the mind of the people as his mind. 2. The good I am good to them, The not good I am also good to them. This is the goodness of nature (de). The trustworthy I trust them, The not trustworthy I also trust them. This is the trust of nature (de). 3. The sage in the world, Mixes the minds of all. The people lift up their eyes and ears, The sage treats them all like children. DaoDeJing 48 Ron Hogan Usually, we try to learn something new every day. But if we want to get right with Tao, we have to let go of something every day. We do less and less, until we end up doing nothing. And it's when we do nothing that we get the job done. Let events take their course, and everything will turn out in your favor. If you act on your ambitions, they will never pan out. Link: https://terebess.hu/english/tao/ron.html#Kap48

he also returns the world to Dao.

Ron Hogan is an example of someone
making the Dàoist teachings their own.

The DDJ is not anti-empiricism per se,
but against empiricism for greed & power.
Understanding nuclear fusion is fine,
building nuclear plants & bombs is not.

#Daoism could be a guide to re-envision our world.

#DaoDeJing 47

DaoDeJing 47 Ron Hogan You don't have to leave your room to understand what's happening in the world. You don't have to look out the window to appreciate the beauty of heaven. The farther you wander, the less you know. The Masters don't wander around They know. They don't just look. They understand. They don't do anything, but the work gets done. The empiricism of modern western science
is conquest by division.
The unruly material world is to be disciplined,
nature is to be tortured piece by piece
so that it may be conquered.

#Daoism preaches a religious empiricism
witnessing Dao’s presence in the world.
