This makes the story more complex, often more real-feeling, and more fun.

The walls are gritty sandstone, not a straight line to be found. The roof is held up by stout beams of wood, but nevertheless have dry-rotted into dust in places. They hold up woven mat roofing, with clay worked into it to make it able to..

Okay, the main setting is in a canyon-type desert. I figure there's a cliff dwelling carved into the side of an overhanging canyon. Cliff wrens build nests inside the buildings and in the windows and doorways; the openings are craggy.

MC absolutely compares himself to his progenitor, aka Kai-in-his-head. Ghost points out how he had two years to get used to being dead and Kai didn't, so Kai's not likely to be ready to do good like Ghost wants.

MC won't compromise on doing what's right, but sometimes he isn't sure what "right" is. The character in his head would absolutely compromise, so sometimes MC settles for just Not Doing That.
