Heterosis in crosses between remnant populations of the rare prairie forb Silene regia suggests that regional admixture provenancing would be a beneficial strategy for this species in ecological restorations. Between population crosses resulted in an overall 112% increase in cumulative fitness compared to within population crosses in a field experiment simulating the initial stages of a restoration. Figure shows means and standard errors for fitness components (top = percent of plants reproducing, middle = fecundity of reproducing plants, bottom = number of fruits produced per seedling planted) for each cross type for three maternal populations of Silene regia (Fou, Tip, and Ver) for the field experiment. In most cases, between population crosses had increased fitness compared to within population crosses. This effect was strongest for fitness components involving fruit counts, however heterosis was only significant for crosses with Fou as the maternal population.
