April 22, 2001: after erosion and heavy rain, part of the north rampart of Château de Saumur, above the Loire, fell and damaged houses below. The 2004–07 repair, among the largest ever on a French monument, hides a concrete core behind matching stone. Honest repair or cheat? #Castles #History

Aerial view of Château de Saumur above the Loire in Saumur, France: pale tuffeau towers with pointed slate roofs and a gilded finial, a stepped approach to the round-towered gatehouse, bastioned ramparts and a footbridge in the foreground, the river and town behind.

Bedchamber. 🛏️
Château d’Azay-le-Rideau.
1518-1527. Loire Valley.
Azay-le-Rideau, France.

There’s no light getting through those heavy bed curtains. Interestingly, the French word for “curtain” is “rideau.”

In 1649 the Council of State ordered the brick great tower at Tattershall Castle, Lincolnshire, demolished, and repeated the order all year. In October it noted "as yet nothing has been done therein." It still stands. Why England's castles are ruins, and who gave the orders: #Castles #History

Walls 3.40 meters thick at the base and one way in, one floor up. The keep of Château de Loches in Touraine is entered through a smaller block on its north face. Defense is the usual explanation; no source we read states it. What else could explain it? #Castles #History

For #PalacesAndGardens #LastWords, Spain's Alhambra (1999). Boabdil, the last Muslim ruler in Spain, surrendered to Ferdinand and Isabela on 2 January 1492. More in the alt. #photography #Spain #EastCoastKin #ECK #WCK #castles #castle #history #architecture #LaAlhambra #Granada #Andalucía #España

The image shows an intricately detailed courtyard featuring Moorish Islamic architecture in Granada, Spain.

Regarding the surrender: "The Moorish King arrived where King Ferdinand was, and approaching him, he removed his turban and dismounted his horse as was agreed. He told King Ferdinand not to dismount. He approached him and kissed his arm, giving him two keys to the main gates of the Alhambra, and said to him in his own language: 'God loves you very much; these, my lord, are the keys to this Paradise.' Moving aside a little, he asked to whom the King and Queen had given the charge of the Alcazaba of the Alhambra, and telling him that it was the Count of Tendilla, he asked him to be summoned. Taking a gold ring from his finger with a turquoise stone on which were written these letters: Lei Lehe Ille Ali Lchu, Alan Tabilu Aben Abi Abdilchi; which translated into our Castilian read: 'There is no other God but the true God: and this is the seal of Aben Abi Abdilchi.' He gave it to him, and said: 'With this ring Granada has been governed since it was ruled by the Moors, take it so that you may govern it with it: and may God make you happier than me.'"

Hot oil "was rarely used as a weapon," says English Heritage; John Harris says probably never. Murder holes had a better-documented job: pouring water on fires set at the gate. Caerphilly Castle in Wales has a water chute over its gate. Next myth to test? Name it. #Castles #History

Hey guys! I had an idea: why not use a real map of Kalich Castle to help build it in my game? I projected it onto the terrain, and now I’m following it to build the castle.

June 23, 1789: Henri-Évrard de Dreux-Brézé ordered the Third Estate to disperse. Mirabeau replied that they would leave only at bayonet point. The Dreux line owned Château de Brézé, south of Saumur, 1682 to 1959. Which other château's owners made the textbooks? #Castles #History

Festung Ehrenbreitstein, on the cliff above Koblenz opposite the mouth of the Mosel, is younger than the United States Constitution. The mountain has carried a stronghold for a thousand years. The building you walk into is not one of them. Two replies below. #Castles #History #CastleSky

Édouard Baldus photographed the Château de Tarascon, on the Rhône in Provence, while it was a prison. It held captives until 1926, and that unbroken use is why it survives. Sailors of the Seven Years' War carved ships into its walls. Post the strangest carving you know. #Castles #History

Turn once in the courtyard of the Château de Blois, in the Loire Valley, and you pass a Gothic hall of the early 1200s, a brick wing for Louis XII, François I's open spiral stair, and a Mansart front built a generation before Versailles. Read the courtyard wing by wing. #Castles #History

Château de Pierrefitte is a historic castle in France, associated with the country’s rich medieval architectural heritage. #castles #history #rpg #ttrpg #fantasy #dnd #D&D #medieval

Chateau de Pierrefitte, like many other French châteaux, reflects the importance of fortified residences and estates in the region’s history. Its name, meaning roughly “stone field,” evokes the landscape and traditional stone construction found throughout rural France. Castles and manor houses of this kind provide insight into the architectural traditions and local history of the French countryside. Photographer: @daftintin_drone

About 11 weeks, mid-December 1521 to early March 1522. Hidden at Wartburg Castle above Eisenach, Thuringia, as Junker Jörg, Luther turned Erasmus's 1519 Greek New Testament into German pitched to read from the Rhine to Saxony. Push back if a castle did more to a language. #Castles #History
