Saturn and its moons yesterday night from near Nairobi. More info in annotated image and alt texts.

#astrophoto

150 mm f/12 Newtonian (SkyWatcher Heritage 150P + 2x Barlow), ToupTek AE676C, UV/IR cut filter. North and east arrows from the moon astrometry.

Planet: 437,588 6ms frames 20:24-21:11 UT (mid 20:48:50 UT), gain 2000, captured with firecapture. PSS stack, deconvolution, PSX wavelets, GIMP 2x, curves, saturation, unsharp mask; 0.1116"/px.

Moons: 20 x 1.0 s full frames 21:15:37-21:17:28 UT (mid 21:16:32 UT), positions as measured then (within O.14" of JPL Horizons); brightened non-linearly, so relative brightness is not to scale.Annotated version with moon labels (+ 1 star) and scale marker. Also containing text "Saturn and moons, 2026-10-14 UT, Nairobi (lat -1.28, Ion 36.82, 1700 m).

The Eastern Veil Nebula (NGC 6992), a massive supernova remnant located 2,500 light-years away in the constellation Cygnus. The supernova exploded just 8,000 years ago - a blink of an eye by cosmic standards...

🔭 A dying star is throwing a cosmic tantrum in this combined image from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope and the Galaxy Evolution Explorer.

In death, the star's dusty outer layers unravel into space, glowing from the intense UV radiation released by the hot stellar core.

M39, high overhead tonight in Cygnus. A small open cluster of young, bright blue stars. Angular dimension from our POV is 29 arc minutes (approximately the size of the full moon). Hard to get the cluster stars to pop AND maintain the intensity of the blue (cluster) stars.
