Young woman at work, C18th, by #FrancoiseDuparc (Spanish-born French, 1726-78). Held by Musée des Beaux-Arts de Marseille; source, A Space of Their Own, space.artmuseum.indiana.edu/artists/18

A painting of a young white-skinned woman with brown hair (barely visible just under the front of her cap), seated and facing at an angle toward the left side of the artwork. At the far left a portion of a chest of drawers is visible, on which sits a shallow wicker basket. The woman, wears a tan-colored dress under a white jacket and a white headcovering with 2 layers of ruffles at the edges and a blue band. Her head bends toward a piece of fabric that she holds with both hands.

#SaintTeresa amid the thorns, in The Life of the Seraphic Mother #StTeresa of Jesus, pub'd 1678, engraved by #ClaudineBrunand (French, 1630–1674). The Johns Hopkins Univ Sheridan Libraries via The Internet Archive, archive.org/details/wotb...

#womenartists #artherstory #StTeresaofAvila #nuntastic

A photo of a left-hand page in an old book with foxed paper, on which an engraving is printed. The engraving has a narrow decorative border. About 80% of the space inside the frame is occupied by a picture of a wilderness scene, in which the head and shoulders of a haloed woman in a wimple, and her legs and her left foot, are visible amidst the wild growth in which she reclines. To the left of the image is a dead tree trunk, against which leans a crucifix, to which she reaches out her right hand. At the top of the artwork is the bottom portion of (perhaps?) the sun, depicted with about a dozen spikes. The bottom fifth of the engraving presents three lines of italicized script, reading: "S.V. Theresia coelestis sponsi / vulnera commiferans, spinarum in- / ter fasces se se volutat" (which auto-translates online to "Saint Teresa, compassionately sharing in the wounds of her heavenly Spouse, rolls herself amidst bundles of thorns").

Portrait of Fra Girolamo Savonarola, n.d., by #PlautillaNelli (Italian, 1524-88). Held by Robert Simon Fine Art; source, issuu.com/robertsimon5... #artherstory #womenartists #nuntastic #SuorPlautillaNelli

A roughly half-length painting depicting a white skinned, unsmiling man with an aquiline nose and a light 5-o'clock shadow standing sideways against an olive-green background. He faces the left edge of the artwork, resting his left hand on the top of a wooden support (pulpit? chair?) in front of him. His right elbow is bent, and he points upward with his right forefinger while his other right fingers curl into his right palm. He wears a long-sleeved white robe with gold flocking (the shape kind of resembles little flares); his head, neck and back are covered with a dark cloak that also has gold flocking. At the back of his head is a gold disk with radiating gold wavy lines that kind of mirror the lines of the flares that decorate his clothing.

Announcing #ArtHerstory's 2026 holiday card!

This year's Christmas card that reproduces Fede Galizia's "Adoration of the Magi" (original painting held at Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte).

The 10-card boxed set is available

On Etsy, etsy.me/4ygc3wU

or

Online, artherstory.net/product/10-p...

A Christmas card that reproduces the Adoration of the Magi painting by 17th-century artist Fede Galizia. It is a busy scene with quite a retinue of people and animals; at the forefront is the seated Virgin, with her baby in her lap and Joseph standing behind her. The three richly dressed kings surround her; the middle king, wearing a gold robe with white trim, kneels and touches his cheek to the baby's right leg, holding his right foot. At the very top, just to the right of the middle, is the star that led the kings to the Christ child. On the back is a thumbnail of the image, with text about the artwork and branding info.

Angèlica Justiniano: A Painter in Baroque Catalonia
by Mercè Valderrey
artherstory.net/angelica-jus...

Mercè's introduces readers to Angèlica Justiniano, a woman painter of C17th Catalonia (documented 1614–1650) and presents the artist's 4 known works.

Two paintings, each originally on an organ door, which together depict the Annunciation. At left is the Archangel Gabriel, standing with his right arm raised and pointing heavenward, while he holds a stalk of lilies in his left hand. At right is the Virgin Mary kneeling by a balcony, with a book open on a stand in front of her and a covered basket on the ground by her left knee. Cherubim float in the air above her head. A landscape is visible beyond the balcony's stone balustrade.

With her right arm she cradles an empty brown handled basket, on the top edge of which rests her left hand. Her head is tipped so that her right cheek rests against the basket handle as she gazes at the viewer. On a little table at the lower left a small pile of oranges (4 are visible) sits on a white cloth. The top of one of the fruits is lopped off to expose a cross-section of the interior.
