What do you see in Paul’s eyes? 👀

In this 17th-century painting, the apostle Paul holds the hilt of a sword firmly in both hands. The artist who painted him remains a mystery. But there’s something about Paul’s gaze that draws you in. 🧐

What is more precious to you than gold? 💙

For centuries, the deepest blues were made from ground lapis lazuli. This extraordinary pigment was once so rare and valuable that it was worth even more than gold. ✨

In Rachel Ruysch’s day, wealthy patrons were willing to pay 1,000 guilders or more for her lavish floral still lifes. Ruysch was the most famous artist of her time and even became court painter to the Elector of the Palatinate. 💐

The place of pets in people’s lives has changed dramatically through the ages. For centuries, animals were valued mainly for travel, transportation and work. But gradually, their role began to change.

In this painting from around 1756, Jean-Etienne Liotard’s wife is pouring herself a cup. The painting on the wall offers a little glimpse of the interior of the Nieuwe Kerk in Delft and was most likely based on a work by Hendrick Cornelsz. van Vliet. ☕

This pumpkin found its way into the still life Gerardina Jacoba van de Sande Bakhuyzen painted in 1869. There it sits on a garden table surrounded by grapes, other fruit, hollyhocks and more flowers. Quite the colourful assortment to find beneath a shrub! 🎃

This remarkable 18th-century violin is one of just five Delftware violins known to exist. It was created as a decorative object. Look closely and you’ll spot its delicate ivory tuning pegs, bridge, and tailpiece. 🎻

In this painting, Ludolf Bakhuysen depicted dark storm clouds gathering and high, threatening waves tossing the ships back and forth. But in the background, the clouds are parting and the sun is beginning to shine through. ☀️

Tucked inside the Rijksmuseum is the Cuypers Library. On the wall, an inscription reads: "Thou hast two eyes and one mouth. Let this be a sign to you - to read much, and not to speak." 🤫

The theologian and scholar Daniele Barbaro is portrayed here with a special book: his own translation of a treatise on architecture by the Roman architect Vitruvius. Barbaro published it in 1556, with illustrations by the famous architect Andrea Palladio. 📖⭐️

What's your go-to remedy when you're feeling ill? 🤧

Oh dear, this woman doesn't look very well. Behind her, a doctor examines a flask of urine. What might he discover? Meanwhile, a foot warmer keeps her feet nice and warm, while a cat keeps the patient company.

The book held by Saint Catherine of Alexandria probably contains love songs. Sitting beside her is Saint Jerome. You can recognise the two saints by their attributes: Catherine by the sword and broken wheel, and Jerome by the lion. 💗📖
