One of two LGBTQ characters in the story, they are known for their quiff hairstyle & witty banter. They can also brew up any sort of coffee your heart might desire. ☕️

Ariel Ellis, a key character in my #AcademicMystery, RESOLUTE DEATH, began as a walk-on. I needed someone to interrupt a conversation. They became so much more!

📢 Hey #AcademicSky & #PhDSky If you're need a break but still love the scene (I know, I've been where you are now!), consider my
#AcademicMystery, RESOLUTE DEATH. Intricate plot & nuanced characters, not to mention a gorgeous campus.

Info here: jajablonski.com/books (& description in alt-text).

Front and back cover of Resolute Death by J.A. Jablonski. Original art: Stephen Richards. Front is a presentation. Against an all-white background, is a large black raven in flight. All-caps, dark red title is set midway on the cover. Text below in a small, black serif font reads "An Osley College Novel." Below that, in a dark red font matching the title is the author's name. The back cover shows more of Richards' design: black and grey, ink-wash drawings of tree trunks against a white background. Superimposed is the book description/blurb: a roughly, dark-red outlined box enclosing the book's description: "Resolute Death offers an intense, immersive tale with masterful plotting. An essential read for those who love an intricately woven mystery that highlights loss, memory, retribution, and found family. When a glamorous music professor is found dead in the carillon tower of Osley College, a small liberal arts college in the Driftless Region of western Wisconsin, Maude Ascham, the new chief of campus police, has her hands full. Her investigation leads to porn-watching students, an angry boyfriend, a betrayed lover, and feuding colleagues. Students, faculty, and staff: all are implicated. When the Dean of Libraries commits a gruesome suicide three weeks later, the investigation becomes more than a matter of murder. Who is blackmailing James North, the bereaved, ex-hobo English professor and celebrated poet? Why would someone destroy the 175-year-old bonsai of the cantankerous college gardener? Was last December’s drowning of a senior music student really an accident? And what of Ariel Ellis, the eccentric, blue-haired barista, who is clearly hiding something behind their theatrical banter; and Esha Larkin, the maps librarian seen weeping on the old library’s roof at dawn? Each appears to hold a vital piece of a dangerous puzzle. There is a killer on campus . . . can they be stopped?"

Richards' art work hung over my desk in a shadowbox-style frame that enhanced the sense of movement I felt as I wrote my characters. 🖼📖✍️🏼

Text of an Instagram post Stephen Richards written in response to my own cover reveal post for Resolute Death. "Thrilled to have a drawing of mine feature on the cover of the debut novel by American author and dear friend @judeajablonski We first met here a few years ago and have had great fun exploring the ideas behind her writing and the stories behind my drawings. It seemed inevitable that we would one day work together and it was therefore a great pleasure to receive her invitation to collaborate on her book. She liked the raven breaking cover from the tree copse from my Icarus series as she felt it resonated with the themes and characters in her narrative. I think it sits extremely well on the cover. The book is published at the end of the month and I wish her every success with its launch."Front cover of Resolute Death by J.A. Jablonski. Original art: Stephen Richards. I've been getting many compliments on the cover of my about-to-be-published #AcademicMystery, RESOLUTE DEATH.

So exciting, then, that I was able to interview the man behind the vision: Stephen Richards, UK landscape architect & professional artist. Read it here: jajablonski.com/2026/10/12/a...

Black and white formal portrait of Stephen Richards. A white, middle-aged man with close-trimmed white beard and quiff-style hair. He wears a button-down shirt and dark suit jacket. The large image is framed by two narrow inserts of wax resist and ink tree trunks that are Richards' work.

It was pretty neat though that a real polar vortex system froze over my entire campus (in the Driftless Region of western Wisconsin) at the very moment I needed to do some, shall we say, nefarious plotting. [insert maniacal laughter from author here]

In writing RESOLUTE DEATH, Bk 1 in my Osley College Mysteries, I was meticulous about IRL weather conditions & matching events to them. It was exhausting (even tho info searching is my key professional skill). Sayers & P.D.James didn't do that! So I’m off that hook for the rest. 😄

“College campuses can be kind of funny about their trees.” (AHA)

Osley College, the setting of my #AcademicMystery, RESOLUTE DEATH is no different. Auspicious then that my cover artist, UK artist, Stephen Richards, finds them rather fascinating as well.
