The Puffin heading this #birds thread definitely has one of the #BestBeaks (main #BirdOfTheDay theme today), but I'm ending the thread with a brilliantly beaked bird who also qualifies for the alt theme #YellowElements: a Great Cormorant. Photographed at Brandon Marsh on Saturday. #UKWildlife #ECK 🌿

Photo of the head and long neck of a Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), swimming (towards the left side of the picture) in a lake. The Great Cormorant, with a long, grey beak tipped with a downward-pointing hook, looks almost prehistoric. At the base of the beak, especially the flower part, there is some yellow colouration, which in this image looks very bright with the sun on it. The bird's eye is a sea-green colour, with a small, black pupil and thin, black rim. Behind the eye and the base of the beak is a pale brown patch, with the rest of the bird's head and neck (and its body, only part of which is visible in this image) being covered with very dark brown, almost black, plumage.

#BirdOfTheDay is again the neighbourhood #BrushTurkey. I make no apology for this, as he meets the criteria for the alt theme #YellowElements (check out the wattles!), and I captured this footage today.

Pelikan różowy (Pelecanus onocrotalus)

A side-profile photograph of a Great White Pelican swimming in deep blue water. The bird has white and pale pink plumage, a distinct tuft of feathers at the back of its head, and a massive, elongated bill. The pouch beneath its lower mandible is a striking, bright yellow color, while the upper part of the beak shows hints of pink and grey.

Today Helen @helenbennett.bsky.social is looking for the #BestBeaks and #YellowElements for #BirdOfTheDay.

I'm somewhat broken, having grown up among the herring gulls and terns of the UK's southern coasts; I find the Susquehanna's ring-billed gulls 'exotic' 🤪

A ring-billed gull struts along the path at Long Level along the Susquehanna in York County, PA. While common around here, I love them in the winter months, where their plumage with wings outstretched can be a delight

The American Goldfinch is the #birdoftheday and has #yellowelements all over.

Helen says today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #BestBeaks and the alt is #YellowElements.

This juvenile flamingo hasn’t yet developed its bright pink plumage so its beak seems to glow. And of course, my favorite beak of all - an Atlantic puffin.

#birds #ECK

A young flamingo is pale pink, standing in the sand on the ocean’s surface line. A black and white puffin is standing in tall green grass. Its orange, yellow, black and white striped beak is prominently displayed.

Helen Bennett 🌿;'s #BirdOfTheDay theme is #BestBeaks & ALT theme is #YellowElements
If "best beaks" suggests beaks that enable a varied diet, it's hard to go past the Gallinula tenebrosa (Dusky moorhen), who dine on everything from algae to carrion.
They meet the yellow elements theme too.

A Dusky moorhen in a vibrant green bed of water weed.
The bird is medium sized with a charcoal coloured head and chest. Its feathers lighten slightly on the wings and tail.
It has a bright red face shield that meets its large, strong, and equally red beak. The last third of the beak is bright yellow.
