#WSocialFacts

You can not steal an open source app! Period!

No, you cannot technically "steal" the underlying code of an open-source app because it is intentionally made public for anyone to view, download, and use. However, you can illegally infringe upon its copyright or violate its licensing terms, which the developer community and the law often treat as theft.
How the legal boundaries work depends on the context:
1. License Violations (Legal "Theft")
Every legitimate open-source application comes with an open-source license. If you use the code but break the rules of that license, you are committing copyright infringement and can be sued:
• Permissive Licenses (e.g., MIT, BSD): These allow you to do almost anything, including selling the app or turning it into private, closed-source software. However, you must still include the original creator's copyright notice and attribution. If you strip their name off and claim you built it from scratch, you are violating the license.
• Copyleft Licenses (e.g., GNU GPL, AGPL): These require that any modified or distributed version of the app must also remain open-source. If you take a GPL-licensed app, tweak it, and try to sell it as a locked-down, proprietary application, you are breaking the law.
2. Trademark and Branding Theft
While the code is free to copy, the branding, logo, and name of the application are usually protected by trademark law. You can copy the code of an app like Firefox or Signal, but you cannot compile it, put it on an app store, and call it "Firefox" or "Signal." You must strip out all their official branding first (a process known as "forking").
3. Apps with No License
If a developer puts their app's source code on a public platform like GitHub but forgets to include a license file, you cannot legally touch it. By default, copyright laws grant the creator exclusive rights. Copying an unlicensed project and republishing it is direct copyright theft, and the creator can issue a standard DMCA takedown notice to have your version removed.

My prediction: #Wsocial will be the first PDS the rest of the ATmosphere simply stops carrying.

Which is almost poetic. A protocol built so that nobody can be thrown out, and a company working hard enough to become the exception people write the tooling for.

Yet you claim it’s the second-largest ATProto network, even though most of its accounts are ghost accounts. Wouldn’t inflating its user numbers be just as easy as inflating YouTube views?

It's not only a ghost town, it's an engagement desert!

#WSocial 's tagline is "Trust Your Feed" – ironic, considering that the company's co-founder and most of its acolytes routinely publish misrepresentations about the state of the network.

Second largest platform on ATproto? Matching Bluesky's KPIs? With these numbers?!?

#WSocialFacts #WSocialPics

a screenshot from @mackuba's website https://blue.mackuba.eu/stats/ showing that Eurosky has about 9k weekly posters, whereas W Social has 1ka screenshot showing the website pdsls.dev, comparing the live firehoses of W Social and Eurosky just now, over a 5 minute period. W Social had 34 events, whereas Eurosky had 1683
@palle.eurosky.socialSep 29, 2026, 7:56 PM

#Wsocial is pretty much the same #GhostTown as #WeDontHaveTime - The difference is they can't inflate numbers on ATProto!

The #NoGhostTown hasthag is pure comedy and calling #WsocialFacts the 2nd biggest platform in the atmosphere is a blatant lie. It's the biggest desert though!

Data > opinion!

Note: Just because an account can have a human creator, doesn't prevent them running automation on it!

The Distinguishing Factor: Unlike standard Bluesky clients, W Social is focused on "digital sovereignty". It hosts its PDS data on European infrastructure and strictly implements an identity verification mechanism to eliminate bots and foster verified human interaction. #WsocialFacts

W Social is a distinct European social media application, but it is built on the open AT Protocol (Authenticated Transfer Protocol). It does not "run on Bluesky" the application; rather, both W Social and Bluesky run on the same shared ecosystem, known colloquially as the Atmosphere. #WsocialFacts

"Wsocial is, moreover, the deadest horse in this universe and doesn't even have its own platform, but runs on Bluesky."

It runs on 'AT Protocol' Platform same as #EuroXitter/sky and any other independent PDS clients. eg. blacksky.app

They went with Wario-style merch.

Wario, the mean, hot-tempered and greedy anti-Mario. The character Elon Musk chose to play on SNL.

Branding is hard. 😎

Saturday Night Live Sketch Still

Subject: Elon Musk dressed as the Nintendo character Wario during a courtroom comedy sketch on Saturday Night Live (SNL).

Costume Details: He is wearing a bright yellow cap with a blue "W" logo, a matching yellow long-sleeve shirt, purple overalls with oversized white buttons, white gloves, and a jagged black handlebar mustache.

Scene: He sits in a wood-paneled courtroom setting with an animated, grimacing facial expression while gesturing emphatically with both hands raised.

Note: “W” = human-verified account. Some non‑W accounts also use this tag—check their reputation. I’m human and avoid posting theories with the tag, but I can still be wrong.

You have gone from the facts about #Wsocial to my gaming posts. I will take that as a concession.

For the record, it is a trend running across the ATmosphere. For the record, it is also irrelevant.

The facts have not moved.

My Roman empire: the thought process that went into the decision by @ec.europa.eu to move from @bsky.app to #WSocial.

I especially wonder what kind of due diligence they did on the tech side, considering that #WIdentity, to this day, doesn't work properly for most prospective users.

#WsocialFacts

#WSocialFacts Correction!

I share some wrong theory of mine above on 'Founding Members' ~ @palle.eurosky.social You need to fact check your information ‬before sharing it? Wonder what else you get wrong? Yes some may have been manually verified, but not necessarily true for all 'Founding Members'.
