So quiet
Even the wind
Races Past
Endlessly silent
Not a sound
Escapes this bubble

Sometimes, the scene you spent hours perfecting isn't the one readers remember. It might be a quiet conversation, a painful goodbye, or a tiny detail that changes everything. Writers, which scene in your book do you hope stays with readers long after they finish?

#WritingPrompt
I like to put a twist on an existing recognizable phrase.

The Night of Fallen Gods is meant to evoke the Night of Broken Glass.

A Labor of Duty is a play on “A Labor of Love”

The Dreams Between is a play on Between Dreams and Reality.

Etc etc.

Audrey was always meant to feel a few steps ahead of Lottie when it came to fashion in 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝐿𝑎𝑠𝑡 𝐻𝑒𝑖𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝐵𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑏𝑢𝑟𝑦 𝑀𝑎𝑛𝑜𝑟.

Audrey was always meant to feel a few steps ahead of Lottie when it came to fashion in 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝐿𝑎𝑠𝑡 𝐻𝑒𝑖𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝐵𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑏𝑢𝑟𝑦 𝑀𝑎𝑛𝑜𝑟.

Her black drop-waist afternoon dress is based on a French Madeleine & Madeleine gown from around 1919 (purchased at Bergdorf & Goodman in New York City), and 𝐑𝐎𝐔𝐆𝐇 𝐃𝐑𝐀𝐅𝐓 𝐌𝐄™ apparently decided the reader needed a full guided tour of every pleat, sash, neckline, floral accent, and daring inch of dropped waist. 😂

The final version keeps the parts that actually matter: the loose silhouette, the decorative bands, the modern shape, and what the dress says about Audrey.

She’s fashionable. Confident. A little unconventional. And, crucially, she’s showing Lottie a version of womanhood that feels newer and freer than anything she grew up around.
One of the things I loved about writing The Last Heir of Bradbury Manor was using the clothes to help tell that story.

The fashion still matters... I just eventually learned it doesn’t all need its own paragraph.

poetry and songs

I love old houses.

Unfortunately, Rough Draft Me loved them a little 𝐭𝐨𝐨 much.

I love old houses.

Unfortunately, Rough Draft Me loved them a little 𝐭𝐨𝐨 much.

Winthrop House in The Last Heir of Bradbury Manor was heavily inspired by 𝐀𝐜𝐤𝐥𝐚𝐦 𝐇𝐚𝐥𝐥, a seventeenth-century mansion in Middlesbrough. And when I first wrote Lottie’s arrival there, apparently I decided the reader needed to know 𝙀𝑽𝙀𝑹𝙔𝑻𝙃𝑰𝙉𝑮.

The mullioned windows.
The stone lintels.
The chimneys.
The cornices.
The pilasters.
The pediment.
The coat of arms.

Basically, I stopped writing a gothic novel and briefly became a very enthusiastic real-estate agent and/or architectural essayist.

The final version keeps what actually matters: Winthrop House is orderly, prosperous, bright, and untouched by decay. Everything Bradbury Manor isn’t.

That contrast tells you more about both houses than three paragraphs of architectural vocabulary ever could.
Sometimes research gives you more detail.

Editing teaches you which details deserve to survive.

One of the things I loved researching for The Last Heir of Bradbury Manor was all the tiny sensory details that make 1919 feel lived in.

Clothes are easy to show. Smell is a little trickier.

Lottie’s mother wore 𝑬𝒂𝒖 𝒅𝒆 𝑪𝒐𝒍𝒐𝒈𝒏𝒆 𝒂𝒖 𝑯𝒆́𝒍𝒊𝒐𝒕𝒓𝒐𝒑𝒆 𝒃𝒚 𝑩𝒆𝒓𝒕𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒊, an actual early-20th-century fragrance with that sweet, powdery, almond-and-vanilla character that became tied to Lottie’s memories of her.

And unlike some of the other things I’ve shared from the rough draft… I apparently decided this one was worth keeping almost exactly as written. 😂
The location changed. The scene got tighter. But the green bottle, faded flowers, and that scent bringing her mother back for just a moment all survived.

Sometimes editing means cutting half the description and once in a while you look at something and think: Nope. That stays.

One of my favorite parts of writing 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝐿𝑎𝑠𝑡 𝐻𝑒𝑖𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝐵𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑏𝑢𝑟𝑦 𝑀𝑎𝑛𝑜𝑟 was the fashion. I love the clothes of this era, and in the rough draft, I was absolutely not afraid to write every damn detail. 😂

This is Lottie’s gala dress, based on Lucile’s 1916 “Happiness” gown. And apparently Rough Draft Me looked at it and thought, 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑑𝑒𝑟 𝑚𝑢𝑠𝑡 𝑘𝑛𝑜𝑤 𝑎𝑏𝑜𝑢𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑡𝑎𝑓𝑓𝑒𝑡𝑎. 𝐴𝑛𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑛. 𝐴𝑛𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑒 ℎ𝑜𝑜𝑝𝑠. 𝐴𝑛𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑝𝑒𝑡𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑜𝑎𝑡. 𝐴𝑛𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑙𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟𝑠. 𝐴𝑁𝐷 𝑇𝐻𝐸 𝑅𝐼𝐵𝐵𝑂𝑁𝑆.

But sometimes less really is more.
By the final draft, all of that became:
“In the mirror she shimmered like liquid moonlight; lace whispering fragility over something steadier beneath. The skirt floated at mid-calf, old-world elegance with a modern flair.”

Same dress. Same image in my head. A lot fewer words getting between the reader and Lottie.

Swipe for the 𝑹𝑶𝑼𝑮𝑯 𝑫𝑹𝑨𝑭𝑻 𝑽𝑬𝑹𝑺𝑰𝑶𝑵™, back when I apparently thought I was writing the museum placard too.

Velvet depths as night breaks
To the touch of earthly toil and care
Celestial treasures from distances unknown
Respond to the night bird’s call
To guard the lonely soul to darkened feasts
Illuminating pathways in the dark
They are a whispered wisdom when the wind blows
