Does your editing process tend towards addition or reduction?

Mostly rearranging. I write as I think, but I am a bit scatter-brained. Editing requires making it read normal.

Does your editing process tend towards addition or reduction?

A great deal of my editing process is about character and continuity. My first draft, I usually don't have the characters' voices and vocabulary clearly distinguished in my head, so they all tend to sound the […]

Does your editing process tend towards addition or reduction?

Addition with smoothing. I get the shape of the idea down, then usually add supporting material for what made sense in my head but not on the page. The rough draft doesn't usually have anything that isn't […]

#WritersCoffeeClub 10/7 Does your editing process tend towards addition or reduction?

Addition. There are always more explanatory footnotes to make.

#WritersCoffeeClub 7th Oct ~ Does your editing process tend towards addition or reduction?

Addition. I get the architecture of the story outlined first, then I go through and add dialogue, scenery and other embellishments.

#WritersCoffeeClub 7th Oct ~ Does your editing process tend towards addition or reduction?

That depends on the project. Different stories, different editing. If pushed, I would have to say I tend towards building.

#WritersCoffeeClub Oct. 6: What might an inattentive reader miss in your work?

In volume 2, the heroine and others notice falcons occasionally around the abbey. The statue of the Madonna and Child in the church is actually Isis and Horus. Horus is often represented as a falcon.

#WritersCoffeeClub for Oct 7. Does your editing process tend towards addition or reduction?

Different for different cases.
- in biography, it adds, as I recognize things I hadn't seen before
- in fiction, it subtracts, as I prune out "leaves" in favor of the "tree"

#WritersCoffeeClub for Oct 7. Does your editing process tend towards addition or reduction?

I do both, obviously, but I end up removing a huge amount, which I keep in an "offcut" document for the project in question. Often I have gone into too much detail or otherwise am not happy with the […]

#WritersCoffeeClub Oct 6: What might an inattentive reader miss in your work?

Plenty. That's on purpose. Otherwise, why would you read it more than once?

#WritersCoffeeClub Oct 6: What might an inattentive reader miss in your work?

All of the embedded pop culture or historical references. In a werewolf story, I used actor names from Teen Wolf movies for character names.

#WritersCoffeeClub Oct 6. What might an inattentive reader miss in your work?

I sometimes try to slip in as many quotes from Scottish people as I can.

What might an inattentive reader miss in your work?

I wouldn't think of it that way. They'll get what was there for them. If they enjoy it enough to read it again later, maybe they'll get another layer of it, or feel a different POV character's perspective more. There […]

#WritersCoffeeClub 6/10: What might an inattentive reader miss in your work?
Well, I suppose a truly inattentive reader could potentially miss just about anything…
I imagine a lot of people would miss the small acts of homage to Ursula K Le Guin…

#WritersCoffeeClub 6th Oct ~ What might an inattentive reader miss in your work?

1. My place and character names are typically thought-out and researched, and compliment the story.

2. If I'm using formal language, it's meant to be that way.
