And then, of course, we also have '100 dogs' - almost Dr Seuss-like rhymes (comforting, familiar, clever!) and clean, funny, breed-accurate illustrations. I think this book has managed to capture the whole range of diverse life that is "dog".

Illustrated cover of "100 dogs" by Michael Whaite, it shows 10 different dogs engaging in various activities like burying a bone, sniffing butt, chasing its tail, and being a magical fairy. An illustrated page from the book with the word "which" in the centre surrounded by all kinds of dogs doing all kinds of dog-things.

Consulting my home-stock reveals that @peterbently.bsky.social is a particular favourite and a strong contributor to dog books. See the more recent 'Dogs in Disguise' as well as the *forever* classic (now 17 years old!) 'The Great Dog Bottom Swap'

My immediate thought was the Disreputable Dog from Garth Nix's Old Kingdom series. For a book where the focus is all on the dogs I would go for Anthony McGowan's Dogs of the Deadlands. Bren MacDibble's The Dog Runner is also great for dog lovers.

Front cover of Lirael by Garth Nix. A young woman with long dark hair stands ready to fight with a sword in one hand and a knife in another. A large blue symbol like a triangle with the top of a capital T running across it intermingles with her image.Front cover of Dogs of the Deadlands by Anthony McGowan. A longhaired white Husky-type dog is running over snow in a forest, a slip shorthaired grey dog with long hair on its ears runs to the left of the white dog. Behind them is a power station.Front cover of The Dog Runner by Bren MacDibble. The silhouettes of two sitting dogs contain an arid hilly landscape in reddish tones. Two young people are on a trike pulled by dogs. There are leafless trees and the sun is large in the sky but a river meanders into the distance. The title and author are also within the dogs silhouette in white text against the red background. Behind the silhouette the page is cream/white speckled with red.

In my ongoing attempt to persuade you to pre-order A Scrap of Moss & Magick – or request your library for a copy! – I thought I’d show you some of the inspiration behind it. Some of this influenced the way I wrote the book, some of it is more vibes based…

Over the summer, I missed posting some newly published books. Time to make up for it!

Atlas & Skye, by Emma Smith Barton, is about friendship, memories & the future, a children's book told in alternating verse & prose. Looks fab. Congratulations Emma!

The book held in front of a bush in my garden. The cover has a cutout keyhole in the centre below the title, inside which are the words ‘Enter here’. The bottom of the artwork is the curved surface of the sun above which planets float in space.

The graphic shows a copy of my book, A Scrap of Moss and Magick, with its lovely cover art of a girl's head, green hair flowing into woods and plants, a magpie and a smoky cat, in the distance, a country house.

What the book's about: Thirza is a servant girl with magickal talents, which she uses to get her chores done and also to have fun. She lives in a big country house owned by a retired magician, Lord Wulfric. The arrival of Lord Wulfric's niece Cecily (and her pet magpie!) changes everything. Soon dangerous secrets start coming to light, and Thirza will have to decide between the life of her best friend and her own.

Every Wednesday (that I remember!), I will post a children’s book I’ve enjoyed.

If you’ve read it too, or you want to share another book, join in!

Ottoline & the Yellow Cat, by Chris Riddell.

Alt text for why I like it.

#ukkidlit #kidlituk #middlegrade

Photograph of my hand holding a paperback copy of Ottoline and the Yellow Cat by Chris Riddell in front of a colourful cushion. The cover is red and shows a blonde, white girl in a dressing gown holding a leather-bound book stamped with an O and a pencil. A yellow cat, wearing a mask and black polo neck, peeps out from behind her. Mr Munroe, a creature who is all hair, stands beside her.

Why I love this book: first, Ottoline, who carries a notebook everywhere, loves exploring and investigating, has collections and is kind and thoughtful. (We should all be more Ottoline.) Second, the world, in which it's accepted that parents just go off travelling around the world sending postcards and leaving you to get on with things and yellow cats can run gangs of dogs. Third, of course the illustrations, but also the celebration of drawing generally.
