A Sonnet for Summer Corn

I hope that I will dream of bright kernels
As I fall asleep with the autumn breeze
Its faint thrumming tickling my windowpane
The sweet fruit of summer, just out of reach
Your stalks that grow tall above rural roads
Grass that blocks the view from a windshield
If only I’d enjoyed your sacch’rin taste
When I flew west to bask in the Indiana sun
I would struggle to floss your kernels out
But now I crave syrup sticky on teeth
The stalks of summer have been cut down
And I cannot see you behind their ghosts
But still I hear your voice, at early dusk
Though all that’s left of you is empty husk

Illusion

C'est la nuit qui lui sourit :

Monde calme, sans un bruit,

No greater symbol could there be for love
Than of the mighty deer, Elcarabae.
Part doe, part stag, two heads both held above
One body, in affectionate display.

They say that distance makes the heart grow fond
Yet never could there be a love more true
Their life would meet its end before their bond
For just one heart is shared between the two.

The first sight seen each morning at sunrise
And last before they slumber every night
Will be each other, always side by side
And happy so, those heads of left and right

For he wants only to be close to her
And she could never love any other.

Changing

In autumn’s restless wind, I feel the shift,
summer unfastening its lingering hold.
Its weight dissolves, a slow and spectral drift
of warmth departing, leaving skin turned cold.

Freed from the grip of what once clung too tight,
I shed the quiet burdens I had worn.
Cells rise like silver embers into night,
joining the fearless leaves in circling storm.

Around my head a whirling untamed ring
of all I was, now breaking into air.
I wander through this soft unravelling,
a hush of death that asks me to repair.

From this undoing, tender, strange, and true,
I cross the threshold and begin anew.
