Last Oct 10 I posted a picture of a small, tabletop gong I'd recently acquired. What I didn't notice until recently is that this coin is embedded in the black wooden base directly under the center of the gong that's suspended above it. The coin is a gold/brass color, has a square open center, and displays 4 raised traditional Chinese characters. Online sources tell me that it's a Feng Shui I-Ching good luck coin. The round body symbolizes heaven and the square hole symbolizes the earth (even though it's the earth that's round and heaven that's a pretty square idea). The raised dots spread randomly across the face of the coin indicate that it's probably a reproduction rather than a genuine coin. It measures about three-quarters of an inch in diameter. Has it brought me luck in the 11 months that I've had it sitting on my desk? It's hard to say. On the one hand, I don't think these coins have brought much luck to the people who spend their days attaching them to gong bases, otherwise they'd have a better job. On the other hand, I believe we make our own luck. In my case, this once again means making something poorly out of inferior home-grown ingredients when what I really want to do is go on Amazon and order a pound of luck for under $10 (and get free overnight delivery). Will that luck be the product of slave labor and inevitably contaminated with lead, feces, and/or Red Dye #2? Probably. But I'm suck a sucker for free delivery, I'd probably order it anyway if they actually offered it (which they don't - I've checked 6 times since I started typing this). In the end, I guess it's best to just forget the whole idea of luck in general and the luck of this coin in particular. That's a hard, sad truth, I'm afraid - but at least I still have a gong to bang on all night long or until the Xanax once again works its magic.

A roll of white, 2-ply Charmin toilet paper serving as an emergency vase for a golden yellow zinnia. The roll is about 4.5 inches in diameter. The zinnia is about 2 inches in diameter. Charmin is made by Procter and Gamble. The zinnia was made by nature using a process called photosynthesis. Since Charmin is made out of trees I guess you can say that photosynthesis is ultimately responsible for it too. Hmmmm . . . . *Making a note to get more zinnias and toilet paper tomorrow in case the sun decides to wink out soon*

Top view of a toy wooden top. About 2 inches in diameter. I can't recall where I got it. I don't know why I still have it. Was there ever a time when tops were the hottest thing going? The most popular toy? The must-have amusement? I must have been asleep that day.

Bottom view of a toy wooden top. The point of course is what it spins on. When it spins. Which is never for very long. Wikipedia tells me that tops are one of the oldest and most widespread toys. They date back thousands of years and have been found on every continent except Antarctica. I guess penguins have always had their eggs to spin and have never felt the need to invent a human-style top. For some reason this makes me love them all the more.

Top view of a Hemingray-16 green glass electrical line insulator. About 2.75 inches in diameter and about 3.75 inches high. Weighs almost exactly a pound. Stamped "MADE IN THE U.S.A." on the side. I purchased it recently for about $3.50 after someone on here (you know who you are!) showed off their collection of electrical line insulators and I simply HAD to have one for myself. I used to have several but... somehow they slipped out of my life at some point. If you see them be sure to tell them I say hi!

Bottom view of the Hemingray-16 green glass electrical line insulator. It has about 30 pebbly little feet around the edge and a large opening in the center which culminates in screw grooves quite similar to the screw grooves that allow one to screw a mop or broom handle into a mop or broom head. It's a marvelous and stylish bit of engineering - and it's amazing that one can acquire it for a mere $3.50. That's why I got actually got two. (They're virtually identical, so if you want to see what the other one looks like just look at this one again. I am!)
