holed up in the Big House.” He meant the meeting house, a large barn like structure common in these Federation homesteads. “Who’s in the Big House?” I asked, ducking as another shadow raced, shrieking, across the sky. The boy stared. I snapped my fingers. “Townsfolk. And me. Like I said, I just happened to be passin’ through when they attacked. Me and some good men got most everybody inside. Then I set off one of those ping crystals that I, uh, got from your stuff.” “Fuck.” My next mental zing was of alarm. Wasn’t supposed to be seeing any brothers with this cargo, and the kid just called them.
