PRE/PERINATAL PSYCHOLOGY AND PHENOMENON OF RE-EXPERIENCE Page 19 ...which stages happened to correspond, by the way, remarkably well with Stanislav Grof‘s four stages of birth — his Basic Perinatal Matrices. He found that natal imagery especially predominates in societies during times of crisis and war, when national purpose and state of affairs are construed as a need to escape or break free from an enclosing and constricting force. He also noted the suffering fetus and the poisonous placenta as sources of these later metaphors and imagery. In fact, in studying the imagery in the national media of various countries he has been able to predict political, social, and economic events such as wars and invasions, recessions, and political downfalls. His work begins to look at the prenatal influences and imprints and how they related to macrocosmic issues of politics, history, social movements, and issues of war and peace.

It seems to be becoming a writer/director’s fad, as increasingly creative ways are being imagined to play it out in scripts. Told You I Didn’t Like Vegetables! Another common variation is when the suffocating item comes out of the person’s mouth. In this frequent scenario, the victim is “infected” with some kind of alien spore which grows inside of him or her and comes thrusting up from inside of the person’s body and out of the mouth, lodging itself there. Often this alien extrusion looks something like a huge asparagus emerging. The perverse sexual aspect of the image also has roots in perinatal, specifically, BPM III experience. This “vegetable” eruption always happens suddenly and climactically, and almost always it results in death. Scenes like this I have observed in the movie “Jacob’s Ladder,” several times on the hit show The X Files, and in many, many other shows.

Certainly the roots of language are in the need for communication around survival while foraging in water. However, with secondary altriciality and the long extra time of mothering, that language ability was facilitated and enhanced. Along the same lines, the intense interaction between mother and child led to extra facility in what we had already been developing in facial expressions for the purpose of communicating. Like language, it is in the mother-infant interaction that particular skill is refined. The uniqueness of this mother-infant time is easy to see when you compare us with other species. For example, think for a moment of the way we normally see a chimp or gorilla baby with its mother. Certainly they interact. Definitely they will occasionally play. How- ever, to a much greater degree, what you observe is a detached attitude of the mother with little to no eye-to-eye contact. That makes sense, when you think of it. For the babies being more mature when chimps and gorillas are born, they are past that time of excessive dependency required of humans. That means that chimps and gorillas can much more take care of themselves, even to the point that they do not need to be held but can cling to the mother’s fur. It follows that extra motherly attention is not necessary.

To go beyond that is a must if one is to experience fulfillment in life; and to do that one must experiment with life and experience outside the bounds of what one is given. We get a lot out of this immersion in the Cosmic Soup of Experience of what is possible. I. APOCALYPSE AND INSANITY Page 10 For most people, I would assume I am not saying anything new in pointing out that our times are unique. All times are unique, true. Still, what no other time has seen is the actual — not imagined — possibility, even likelihood, of the “end of the world.” We are facing the end of our species and perhaps all life on this planet along with us. Considering just one scenario, we have the capacity, with only a minuscule amount of our nuclear weapons, to wipe out everything living on this planet. We all know this. I used the phrase, just now, “end of the world,” deliberately. For I expect that it will evoke in some a reaction that what I am going to say from here on will be a drawn-out verbal version of a familiar cartoon, depicting a bearded and bedraggled man on a street corner, carrying a sign or wearing a clapboard proclaiming, “The end is near!” and that what I will say will have just about as much credibility as that man’s would. I take that chance to make my first point ... which is: The fact that we can so easily dismiss, ridicule, and smugly deride such ideas of apocalypse points to our complacency with these strangest and most precarious of days. In fact, we have lived with this unprecedented situation — dangling on a thread, as it were, above the abyss of nuclear annihilation, to name just one of the possible forces of extinction ... we’ve lived with it for so long as for it to seem commonplace, as part of the normal and familiar furniture of our daily lives.

Aw, Hell The timelessness of prenatal experience at this point — when not getting enough air — feels horrific, an unending nightmare. This part contributes to human ideas of places of forever, endless suffering, for example, hell. Secondary Altriciality and the Origins of Culture The other part of prematurity is the helplessness after birth and the extra dependency of the baby on maternal care for survival and growth. The additional time of helplessness that humans have is termed secondary altriciality. With prematurity came secondary altriciality. And with second- ary altriciality came culture. Let me explain. Sociability The intensive care required of newborns created an exceptionally important time of one-on-one engagement of the infant with its caregivers, usually its mother. Right at the start, we are forced into socializing, however we can. We need to communicate in any way possible to get our needs met. And we are helpless to any ministrations that our caregivers might put upon us. We become more social than our relatives in Nature. By that I mean the increased dependence required of human infants resulted in much greater maternal care and interaction between mother and infant. Thus the need to communicate and nurture led to cooing, led to motherese — which is the baby talk and cooing that mothers adopt naturally and for humans universally, as the way to talk to its baby. Certainly throughout our lives, and especially in our youth, we must expose ourselves to the different possibilities for us so as to “find ourselves.” One’s life is limited, and it is hard to be anything but unhappy when carrying out preordained directives — prescriptions and proscriptions — given from the outside. That has contributed to many lost lives and miserable existences for far too many of us throughout history. Yet there might have been no alternative to that. Today, not only is there no excuse not to seek a happy life in alignment with what one is most able and wants to do, it is tragic if within this Universal Soup of potentialities — wrought of the postmodern coming together of all cultures and knowledge — one allows oneself to be carried along in dismal obedience to the failed initiatives and fearful injunctives of those around us, of those who controlled and directed us at the time in our life when we had little say in things. These are “strange days indeed.” They are without doubt an unraveling of “the world as we know it.” You will see that in the midst of this, we might perceive it all as an unfolding, not unraveling, an apocalypse in the old-fashioned, archaic meaning of the term as revelation or a breaking down of the old strictures on perception and an opening to an actual cosmic overstanding of ourselves and our place in the Nature and the Divine. Hence, at the end of this, against all expectation, you might just “feel fine” ... or much better than that. No, you will not see everything as rosy after reading this. You will not have learned we have been mistaken about the cataclysmic character of current events. In fact, you will be even more aware of the enormity of the events transpiring and how they have direct bearing on you, your life, and especially the lives of your loved ones. We are immersed in water before birth, placental fluid. Near the end of gestation, the mother, when standing, constricts blood vessels to the fetus. This reduces the blood supply to the fetus and thus less oxygen is received. It is called fetal malnutrition. Prior to birth we humans experience suffocation and claustrophobic feelings — we “can’t get enough air”! — which seem deadly and unending. Aw, Hell The timelessness of prenatal experience at this point — when not getting enough air — feels horrific, an unending nightmare. Furthermore, and slightly different from Janov, the significance of the true and false self for the purposes of the perinatal is that Winnicott saw the origins of the true and false selves as being in early infancy, related to the acquiring of satisfaction of needs in that early state. While Janov traces the beginnings of the split that far back, he stresses the consolidation of the unreal self and the near total split with the real self as occurring at a singular event occurring at the around age of four or five — the primal scene. The primal scene is the significant precipitating event causing one to give up one’s struggle to stay real and to surrender to the unreal. Aside from this difference in emphasis, the two are very much in agreement. However, the qualification I need to make regarding his conceptualizations versus Janov’s is that Winnicott saw value in the false self as somehow retaining the interests of the true self. In this way, he saw the false self — as Freud thought as well for his ego, only even more so — as having a function. This is completely unlike Janov who saw the unreal self as being something completely inauthentic which blocks the expression of the real self and needs to be overthrown, “violently,” as Janov put it. Thus Winnicott, in terms of the valuation and view of the ego/unreal self/false self holds a midway point between the positions of Freud and Janov. “WE AIN’T BORN TYPICAL” Page 51

This is where one’s identity is related to one’s dharma, as well. Dharma is a word used in India to mean one’s profound duty in life. And it is where who one is to be coincides with spiritual and ultimate concerns. One has a duty arising out of who one is to be it; that is, to manifest it. A Sanskrit term expresses that notion — atmadharma. It means that one has a dharma, a duty or task or way of being in the world, that is directly related to one’s soulular identity — one’s Atma. In the West we say merely that it is connected to who one uniquely is. This perspective is the spiritual aspect of Identity. For indeed one’s decision of who to be roots us not only in our culture and society, but in the Universe and in relation to one’s inner psychological dynamics and all the metaphysical accouterments of destiny, service, beliefs, and that amorphous thing related to what one needs to do arising out of karmic and personal growth needs and requirements. All these play into what one does and needs to do. So one’s atmadharma says something about the spiritual process, the primal process, and the Identity processes of life ... especially in the places where they all overlap. PREFACE Page xvi

At the same time, Jim Morrison of the The Doors was singing, “Break on through to the other side.” A decade later John Lennon intoned “Strange days, indeed ... most peculiar, mama!” That was in the late Seventies. In the Nineties, the group R.E.M. enjoyed enormous success singing, “It’s the end of the world, as we know it”; then, “and I feel fine.” My point is there is something happening here ... something unprecedented in the entire history of this planet, as far as we are able to know. There are powerful factors and influences at work in our world now that have the capacity to change us and our world in radical ways ... for good or ill. My point also, which I will get into, in the part following this one on “Prenatal Matrix of Humanicide,” is that this unprecedented situation, like the “break on through to the other side” lyric indicates, has something to do with birth and prenatal feelings, womb and birth traumas — an emerging prenatal and perinatal unconscious.
