#OctoberWorldbuilders, hello! Let's focus on board games in your setting today: Do any exist in your world? How complex are they? Do they cover specific themes or concepts? How do players win? Is it comparable to any irl board games?

Back before she joined the Order of Watchers, Arlise was a gladiatrix in the Tyrian Dominion for a while, making a bit of a name for herself in Byrsa and Tyra Nova. Not something she’s especially proud of in retrospect, but she excelled.

Day 8. Does your MC play a sport.

Vivian is a swimmer.

8. MC games

Jynrahd is a dab hand at card games. His poker face has been described as "like a particularly taciturn boulder."
He also enjoys chess; being a soldier, battle tactics come naturally to him and he revels in the chance to use that skill without it costing lives.

Some, yes. If you count jousting. And then, technically professionally.

In Fateweaver, MC Zelora actually played varsity paddlepod at the University of Pittshelm.

She was a top-tier midfielder & could have gone professional had she not suffered an injury due to a dirty play in the championship match her final year.

On book #4, Lina is going to try her hand at dueling. Not because she particularly likes it but for plot reasons. Vikras (the side character who teaches her) is a pro, very renowned.

One of my MCs, Barbara Culann, is a rough-&-tumble tomboy who enjoys sports, especially soccer, or Football as it's known in the Nequinum world. She's very good at it.

#OctoberWorldbuilders The Island is 13km across, and each Day Festival (one every 2 months) hosts local competitions (running, wrestling, etc.) as well as rowing and sailing races--including entirely circumnavigating The Island.

None of my MC's are really athletes, though Adelle does have some experience in riding, being a knight and all. She also naturally has a fair bit of swordplay experience, and even enjoys fencing contests in her free time.

i made a game for my players (hope this applies) that's a bit like hockey but done with brooms and a compact ball of brambles made solid with resin

it's played at a hobby/amateur level and they can earn some coins with it #octoberworldbuilders

Quinn creating an axe throwing team with Olivia, Brook, Yana, and ?, and Kinsley called the Axe'n Vixens.

When Kinsley joins the team mid-season they're the worst team in the league, but no one has more fun.

8: In Karnassia stories (co-authored wishful @jmaxwell-author.bsky.social) Celvan “Swindles” McGee is the last knowledgeable about games, especially games of chance played with cards and dice, which he mostly doesn’t play himself but rather runs a small (and illegal) gambling…

Balan is my games and activities guy! He can often be found kicking a ball around with kids or even devising card games while in camp. If it is a game or activity, he will play it. Or create it.

Organized sports probably exist I just haven't had a need to explore them

#TheDragonblood: Felix plays D&D, and Sabrina joined them for a session.

Aimetor might do magic duels; that could explain where their confidence in their fighting skill comes from. They likely also play friendly boardgames with the polycule.

Day 8

My MC doesn't play anything competitively. She did some track & field while in school, and she's happy to play some pickleball with friends or go snowboarding.

Thanks @kiraofthewind.com

Amaurodios would be baffled by sports and games, but once he learned about them, he'd be very enthusiastic! Not necessarily very coordinated, but still.

Seladion knows about various sports and games and is largely uninterested. But if you got him started, he'd be competitive.

It's impossible for Roberto to participate in any sports because if he were to try at all everyone would immediately know from his reflexes and superior prowess that he is a vampire. He did try basketball once and was just too perfect at it.

It isn't quite a sport as it's not really recreational, but ParDafi Blade Dances DO tend to happen in arenas.

It's rare for an off-worlder to master the highly choreographed movements (known as a Turi), but Gielle managed at 15. (MujaRi takes all the credit)
