A simple question for you: where does money come from?

We need our politicians to watch this now so they can stop the harm that their neoliberal ideology is doing to most of us.

Per #mmt every last cent that Elon Musk has expropriated and captured is new money. The people in these communities are impoverished because the great money generating machine of the central government neglects them. And the absolute shit licking cherry on top is they are given the task of […]

Malcolm, a transport engineer in Rugby, wrote three detailed proposals for accessible bus stops and cycle lanes. Every door closed with the same answer: no money. But the skilled workers existed. The workshops existed. His mother was waiting in the rain.

Wow... Still not sure what to think of it. The historical pov is mind-boggling to say the least, I'm close to saying "teach this everywhere"...

"The NHS can't afford it." Wrong frame. The UK is a currency issuer. The real question is whether real doctors, nurses and beds exist. They do. The Argument Builder will show you how to demolish this claim in seconds.

The government doesn't spend any of the money it collects as tax. That money is destroyed/deleted. All government spending is newly created money and it can create as much as it needs. Money is never the limiting factor for the government.

The government creates new money every time it spends and it can create as much as it needs. If the water companies are available for the government to buy then the government can always afford them. The government could do what Attlee did in 1948 and pay by issuing bonds.

THE GOVERNMENT DOESN'T SPEND ANY OF THE TAX IT COLLECTS!

Framing aid cuts as a budget trade-off is a con. A currency issuer doesn't choose between prisons and aid by squeezing one pot. Both are affordable. The real constraint is real resources and inflation, not pounds.

"Britain can't afford £10bn", wrong frame. A currency issuer asks what real resources and manufacturing capacity exist, not whether the budget balances. That's the actual constraint worth debating.

I am definitely not feeling Richard Murphy these days, especially on the topic of tax for which there is immense daylight between his assertion that tax is what gives money its value. This is not something a lot of #MMT proponents say. Tax creates a demand for currency […]

Marlene wanted to train as a nurse. Northumbria University had the capacity. North Tyneside General needed staff. Treasury spending limits said no.

Three times rejected. Same letter. "No funding available." But the building existed. The equipment existed. The teachers existed.

The EU's fiscal rules don't stop spending because they're economically necessary. They stop it because member states chose to accept them. That is a political fact, not a law of nature. Change the politics, and public investment can move. The constraint is political will, not euros.

"The bond markets won't allow it." Not true. The Bank of England sets interest rates. Markets don't veto a currency issuer's spending. Build your counter-argument.

The government designs a national care service for older people while working-age disabled adults are left to fend for themselves. Not a resource problem. A political choice about who counts.

The government "can't afford" youth politics. A currency issuer that literally creates pounds chooses not to fund democratic participation. That's not a budget problem. That's a values problem.
