Alright, while I maintain that #quartz is just the coolest thing, the properties of cuprite are one surprise after another! For being a pigment stone with conchoidal fracturing, I'm voting #cuprite for #MinCup26 champion!

On the face of it, the two #MinCup26 finalists seem kinda samey at the atom-level. But #Cuprite has interpenetrating networks of atoms and is magnetic - it deserves you vote and the 2026 crown over stoic #Quartz

Image representing the crystal structure of Cuprite - here red spheres represent oxygen atoms, and blue spheres represent copper atoms. The structure has been expanded over a,b and c axes. The representation is drawn in VESTA from entry #7351 in the American mineral databaseImage representing the crystal structure of quartz- here red spheres represent oxygen atoms, and blue spheres/polygons represent silicon atoms. The structure has been expanded over b axis to show off quite how really basic it is. Yes it is piezoelectric, but don't let that sway you. Team #Quartz this is our year! #MinCup26

Gets my physics vote as 20% of Earth’s crust & representative typical elastic moduli, piezoelectricity & its role in clocks, electronics, GPS, computers!

Quartz has played a huge & role in art history since antiquity. Carved, in pigments, canvas prep…

My mini linocut with quartz crystals and word “Quartz” in script in slate grey. Some of the facets of the crystals are printed onto collaged iridescent translucent paper so they have a pink to pale blue sheen.Debra Baxter, Devil Horns Crystal Brass Knuckles (Lefty), 2015, quartz crystal and sterling silver, Smithsonian American Art MuseumThis small linocut represents the chemical element Silicon, with its diamond cubic crystal structure shown in silver. Its symbol, atomic number and a couple of its forms are shown in lilac. Silicon is common in the Earth's crust in, especially in silicate minerals like the quartz crystals shown in each corner. The seafloor is litered with microscopic radialarians, which build their amazing skeletons with biogenic silica. Four such creatures circle the symbol for Silicon on the periodic table. The print is one of an edition of 14, each 6" x 6" (15.2 cm x 15.2 cm) printed on Japanese kozo paper.Rembrandt van Rijn, The Night Watch, a group portrait of Amsterdam's local militia, painted in 1642. Boudinage are one of the most spectacular geologic structures and some of my favorite rocks. The boudins are the eye-shaped lenses of rock wedged between the white quartz layers. This happened when the rocks were being stretched by tectonic forces. The eye-shaped lenses, augen… 👇🏼

and the final is between quartz VS cuprite.

i'm torn, honestly.

The most important final consideration for a geologist looking to flex:

DOES IT COUNTERTOP?

Cuprite, got some cute little cubes, fine.

Now is the time for quartz! Please take a moment to vote for this incredibly versatile and downright crucial mineral. #Quartz #TeamQuartz #MinCup26

It’s the year of quartz, and here’s another photo to convince you: quartz can produce magnificent massive crystals, but also delicate lace-like formations as this beautiful cluster of micro-quartz coloured by chlorite.
