A3: The messaging both flattens and narrows. "Tools" like GenAI flatten how people think about language (e.g., that horrendous ChatGPT commercial with the two older women), and English-only policies narrow both the allowances of linguistic difference and who is allowed to use language. #literacies
Would absolutely LOVE to hear more about how you are thinking of borders ๐ #literacies
A3: I am so fortunate to work with some AMAZING educators that are subverting this harmful, national rhetoric. If my research position can, in any way, spotlight the wonderful resistance #literacies work of these educators, I want to ensure I continue pursuing it.
Good evening! We're so glad to have you with us. #literacies
I grew up in a monolingual household in the Midwest, and was not in many spaces where my languging practices were not in the majority. When I lived and taught overseas for four years, it was the first time that I began to understand my ways of speaking as so particular my context. #literacies
Q3: We continue to see English-only policy proposals and rhetoric impacting our classrooms, especially under our current administration. How are folks feeling the impacts of these policies and messaging in their teaching, research, or personal life? #literacies
Kyle, I'm very seriously putting the r back into my pronunciation of "wash" that I took out as a child. For American regional dialects, Southern English is one of the most hated. Linguistic discrimination sucks. #literacies
Q3 coming up in 1 min... #literacies
I love how you've talked about how geographies are important in shaping your linguistic practices. #literacies Our languaging practices reflect the cumulative impact of our communities upon our lives. We carry them with us.
Lexi, thank you for lifting this. Languaging so always political and never separated from our current states of being. Sending you a hug ๐ซ #literacies
languaging is certainly an embodied practice!! #literacies

The Latinx youth and communities I've worked with over the years have also have left linguistic imprints on me. #literacies
A2: I often locate my languaging roots in the US South. I spent many years trying to shed my southern twang and shy away from colloquial expressions of my home, yet learning more about languaging provided much-needed watering for my linguistic roots. #literacies
A2: Both sides of my family are from the U-S Mรฉxico border region. My linguistic practices partially reflect south-Texas/northern Mexican Spanishes but are also heavily influenced by the unique linguistic creations from the Mexican-American diasporic communities of the Chicagoland area. #literacies
A2: 4/4: Languaging across modalities, societally recognized languages (in a translanguaging framework) and even borders for me, is an important means of relational connection and opportunity for cultural humility. #literacies
A2: Love this! It reminds me how the communities, places, and spaces are such a major part of my own personhood & the identities I hold. Off the top of my head: mid-Southern, education, female friendships, learner, Whiteness (always something to critically reflect on), and so many more. #literacies
A2 1/4: I was born to a monolingual white family, so my English dominant languaging practices reflect that. I began learning Japanese at 12/13, and used it in college at my church, Japanese friends, and in Japan itself. My Japanese is pretty dormant now though. ๐ญ #literacies
