I'm going for a #twofer with this Black-winged Stilt (Himantopus himantopus) for today's #BirdOfTheDay. Not only is it #Black&White but the wings show #Iridescence in certain light. It also happens to have the longest legs on a bird relative to body size. 😀
#birds #ECK #nature #photography #wildlife

A bird with white head and body, and black wings. It has extremely long orange legs and is standing by the edge of dark blue water on a rocky foreshore. Its long black beak is slightly open, and it has a light brown eye. It's facing left, and the early morning sun is catching its left wing transforming the black to dark green with hints of purple.
The claim about the longest legs relative to body size is supported by the Guiness Book of Records.

Sorry I'm very late to the party today but Rob has said that #BirdOfTheDay is #Iridescence with an alt' theme of #Black&White. I've gone with the alt' theme but showing my husband's photos of a #Puffin, a Spectacled or Bridled #Guillemot & a #Razorbill all from Bempton Cliffs. 😍 #birds

Rob’s #BirdOfTheDay theme today is #Iridescence - any bird whose colour changes with light on them.

Here’s a male Mallard duck showing its iridescent green head.

A male Mallard duck with its back towards the camera shows an iridescent green head with yellow bill. Its back and wing feathers are brown, white and black. It is sitting on the ground with green vegetation around it.

A small bird with glossy, iridescent teal-blue plumage on its head and back perches on a thick, dark utility cable running diagonally across the frame. Its tiny black beak is slightly parted as if calling, showing off a crisp, clean white throat and underbelly against a lush, glowing background of blurred bright green foliage.

This glossy ibis seems to have an #iridescence quality for today's #BirdOfTheDay. Photo'd Apr. 2025 at Wakodahatchee Wetlands park in south #Florida.

Who knew Mourning Doves have some #Iridescence? #BirdOfTheDay #Birds #ECK

A Mourning Dove on the ground. It's angled towards the bottom left corner. A patch of light pink iridescence is visible just below its neck. The rest of it blends in with the dry pine needles, cones, and sand/dirt it is standing on.

Per Rob Crank: Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #Iridescence, any bird whose colour changes with light on them. The Alt theme is #Black&White bird whose main plumage is Black & White. #birds #ECK #photography

The iridescence of a male Mallard's head feathers can look blue/purple instead of green!
